Golf Update: Gary
Wolstenholme notches up his first victory of the Senior European Tour
English golfer Gary Wolstenholme shone through on the last day of the Casa Serena Open on Sunday by posting a 13-under 201 to claim a lead of three strokes. The tournament took place at Casa Serena Golf club in
the Czech Republic. The club is located some 5 km away from Chateau Roztez. The event was a senior professional golf tournament on the European Tour, carrying a winner’s prize of $30,000.
Gary wrapped up the final round with a score of 4 under 67 to claim the edge on Brand Jnr and Mark Belsham who finished second and third respectively. The trio gave each other fierce competition on the beautiful course. The course
has majestic, undulating greens and thrilling tees that are worth a visit.
The prize money of $30,000 was the highest amount received by the 50–year-old Englishman. Before shifting to the professional ranks at the senior tour, Gary was considered the world's best-known amateur. However,
after his 48th birthday, he decided to earn some money by playing the game he was good at. By winning the tournament, Gary has confirmed his card for the next two years.
According to the player, it was like a dream come true as it was merely his second event at the Senior European tour and his first victory. He further added that he was not ready for it as he was expecting a top five finish but
he prayed for it and to his surprise, his prayers were answered.
However, according to the experts, Gary is an experienced player and money can’t purchase that. Although his game is not splendid, he gets the job done, thereby his will and consistency matters here. This tournament has opened
the waterways and will likely lead to future successes for Gary.
Moving forward, Gary performed superbly throughout the four day session and did well to hold off strong challenges from both his compatriots Brand Jnr and Mark Belsham. In fact it was Mark who applied the early pressure with two
front nine birdies to push Gary into defensive position. However, Mark could not stay stronger, because of his poor game in the back nine. As for the other Englishman, Brand Jnr, he too stood firm against Gary as he carried vast experience into the tournament,
but ultimately he too stuttered as Gary slid past him.
According to the experts, Brand is one of the finest golfers in England but with age he is losing his swings.
To wrap it up, Gary Wolstenholme is standing in the 13th place on the Order of Merit after earnings of €109,181, in two consecutive events at the Senior European tour. He has claimed his first victory on the tour by scoring 13-under
201 in the final round of the Casa Serena Open.
