Golf Update: Greenbrier Classic update- Jeff Overton steals the show in the second round with 62
Jeff Overton took a commanding lead with eight-under-par in the second round of the Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia.
He scored eight birdies in a bogeyless round followed up by his compatriot from Indiana, Boo Weekley with 4 shots behind. Jeff Overton has not witnessed a victory on the PGA Tour but he has certainly taken a position of finishing six times in top 12.These finishes were dated in last 90 days.
According to Overton himself, he is very excited in being a part of the tournament and he would love it, if he makes it to the top 5 even.
Quite likely, the American has not won any championship but is looking forward to a different story this time. According to the analysts, when a player is near victory, he plays each of his shot with the right accuracy and Jeff Overton seems to show that kind of attitude. Overton's 8-under 62 was the low round of the tournament and his best of the year.
The strategy which Overton used during his bogey less round at the Greenbrier Classic was making the right choice of wedges throughout the round and approaching the hole with one shot. It seems as if he is getting used to the overall life style of the PGA tour and once a player gets use to it, the confidence comes in as a bonus.
This 27-year-old has the credit of being the Big Ten player of the year. He has been playing from Indiana since 5 years; however, this is his lowest score to date, followed up by 7-under 63 at the Colonial tournament.
Jeff Overton kicked off from the back nine holes proceeding towards the front nine. He needed 3 birdies when he reached the 7th hole of par 4, but to his disappointment, he could only finish with 3 straight pars. The 27-yers-old strategy did not work here, he took a shot of 85 yards, which landed 18 feet from the pin because of a slight slide which he faced while putting. However, things ended well for him when the scorecard showed 8 birdies and the lowest score.
Likely, this is the best season for the resident of Bloomington, Indiana. As he had four top five finishes, which includes the T2 position at the Zurich Classic and the Byron Nelson Championship. He was only 2 strokes behind the winner, which means that the player is in the form to win.
Moving forward with his achievements, Jeff Overton is on no 12th at FedEx Cup points and chances are that he might make his way up to the No. 2, if he wins a tournament. Currently, Jim Furyk is at No. 5 and Matt Kuchar is at No. 7 according to the FedEx Cup points. Both of these players are contending for the trophy of Greenbrier Classic, so Jeff Overton will be facing real challenge in moving up the vault.
"Obviously I'd take a win over a second any day of the week - over 100 seconds," Overton said.
Boo Weekley is another name that was in the limelight after the end of the second round. He too did not drop a single shot and finished with a seven-under round of 63. Weekley’s overall performance during the two days was very convincing towards a victory. He hit 17 greens in regulation and had seven birdies in the second round, which makes him only one birdie away from the leader. Altogether, he is 10 under the par.
To sum it up, Jeff Overton performed remarkably well with 8 birdies in the second round of Greenbrier Classic 2010, finishing at eight-under-par. However, this was only the second round, two more rounds are yet to come and only they will decide that which player makes to the top of the leader board and which vanishes from the top12. Till that time, all Jeff should do according to the experts is stay focus and confident, rest is a game of luck, experience and good weather.
