Golf Update: Henrik Stenson and Sergio Garcia on a role in Dubai
The Dubai World Championship is currently underway at the Jumeirah Golf Estates in United Arab Emirates where two of Europe's forgotten stars have set the course on fire. The Swede Henrik Stenson birdied three of his first five holes and was leading with
a 4-under. Stenson has dropped from number four to forty-ninth place in the world rankings.
Along with Stenson, the Spaniard Sergio Garcia also shined at what is the finale of European Tour. Garcia as well posted consecutive birdies and was tied with English Gary Boyd and Australian Marcus Fraser for the second place. Despite his amazing birdies,
Garcia has dropped down to a tie for eighth place with a one under after eleven holes.
Sergio has failed to put up some impressive displays recently which have seen him drop from second place to the 77th.
Neither Garcia nor Stenson kept their Ryder Cup places this time. They were among the early starters of the first round. The 60-man field was sent out to play in reverse order of their standings in the money list. According to this order, Martin Kaymer and
Graeme McDowell would be the last to tee off at 12.30 pm local time.
Following Stenson is Boyd with a 3-under after fourteen holes. Sharing the score with Boyd are Noh Seung-Yul and Joost Luiten.
The Race to Dubai holds a lot of importance for many players due to earnings. The earning leader this year is the German Kaymer with €3,283,930. Following him is the Northern Irishman, Graeme McDowell with €2,993,019. Lee Westwood, who won the Race to Dubai
last year, is in third place with €2,362,143.
Apart from the first prize of 776,000 Euros, the winner will also get a bonus of 932,024 Euros. With more than 1.7 million Euros on stake, there is no wonder the players are eyeing the finish line.
Up until now, Thomas Aiken has played all his eighteen holes and finished with a 2-under. The European Ryder Cup team member, Padraig Harrington has scored par after two holes.
Seeing how it is at present, no one can really say for sure who will prevail in the end as the round is still in progress. All eyes are on the leader Kaymer and McDowell to see who will become Europe’s number one player.
