Golf Update: Highlights of the 1st round of the 92nd PGA Championship, Tiger Woods Career revival
Some strange results shuffled the leader board of the 92nd PGA championship that is taking place at the magnificent linked style course of whistling Straits. Tiger Woods sent an SOS to the other players with one-under opening round at the PGA Championship on Thursday, that he is back from the rags.
Walking off with the worst 72-hole finish of his career at the Bridgestone Invitational, Tiger Woods recovered his game despite of the fog-delayed first round at Whistling Straits. He delivered four birdies and three bogeys all the way to a one-under 71, which could have been lower with a little bit more luck. Everything about him was revolutionary, his putt from the 17th tee to its green, his magnificent eighth hole of the day and a couple of birdie attempts that could have changed the entire scenario if they would have been successful.
Moreover, Tiger Woods was only three shots behind the leaders of the group Bubba Watson and Francesco Molinari. Both of them shot four-under 68 to finish as the top 1. Matt Kuchar, Ernie Els and Nick Watney finished with a four under but unfortunately, because of the fog delay, they could not finish their rounds.
The strangest part of the whole session came with Tiger Woods birdies. In fact the results of extra practice done at Whistling Straits after a terrible performance at the Bridgestone, started to show its colours. According to the media reports, Tiger Woods was seen with his caddie Steve Williams practicing drills to keep his head in a straight angle. He used two large bags of Nike balls and spent more than the practice time allotted for the session.
Moving forward to Phil Mickelson, who performed terrible at the last weeks Bridgestone invitational and missed the chance of taking over the number 1 position of the world ranking; he also came back from a final score of 78 to 1 under par and a tie with 23 players including Tiger woods’ for the top 24th .
Phil Mickelson birdied the 10th hole right after he finished the front nine. However, he missed his drive way earlier, when he took a tee shot from the 10th tee but somehow he managed to get an iron onto the green and birdied it. The next drive was also missed by Phil, as it landed in a bunker on the right. When Phil was on his way to iron it out, the horn symbolizing a delay played and the world number 2 came out of the bunker with the help of his playing partners Graeme McDowell and Louis Oosthuizan.
Talking about the 2010 major winner Graeme McDowell, he finished with a 2 over along with Louis Oosthuizan finished at par.
According to the experts, Phil Mickelson is a good player and he is the best, when he is playing in his best form. It seemed earlier that he lost confidence but after the front nine, he started out good.
Regarding Tiger Woods who made a comeback in yesterdays round played with two other players who happened to be the former PGA Championship winners as well. They were Vijay Singh and Y.E. Yang. Vijay Singh won the PGA Championship in 2004, when it was held here at the Whistling Straits and Y.E Yang is the defending champion at the course of Hazetline in Minnesota. However, Vijay Singh finished with one over and Y.E Yang finished at even par.
On the whole, these were the highlights of the first round of the 92nd PGA championship that was being held at Whistling Straits from 12th August to 15th August. PGA championship has brought a career revival for the world’s number 1 and confidence for the world’s number 2, Phil Mickelson.
