Golf Update: Hoffaman claims the victory at the Deutsche Bank Championship golf tournament at TPC Boston
The way he got himself out of the bunker and birdied the hole right from there, he surely deserves to be the champion of the second leg of the FedEx playoff series. For the ones who don’t have a clue, Charley Hoffman has won the Deutsche Bank Championship, which was taking place in TPC Boston.
The American surged to victory after posting a score of 62 in the final round of the championship to claim the victory by a lead of five strokes over the last night leader Jason Day. Hoffman started the day with a blast and it seemed as if the 33-year-old was set on fire and yes, he was. He shot eleven birdies in a row which shunned the spectators and other golfers present on the course. The strangest part of the story was that when he entered the round, he was four strokes behind Jason Day and no one was expecting him to strike and surge to victory.
As for Jason Day, he was a changed man over the night, as he started with a very slow pace. Although there were birdies in the front nine but from 8th to the 15th hole, the only thing that could be seen on the score card were pars and nothing else. Specifically in conditions like this when, there was a strong competitors bypassing with great momentum a lot was required. Moreover, at the end of the round, Jason Day was left with a 17 under which means now he was left behind to catch up for the five missing strokes which he could not. However, two other players managed to match the scores of that of Day. Those two players were Geoff Ogilvy and Luke Donald .They settled for a score of 17 under after firing two birdies at the last two holes of the back nine. As for Donald, he could have outmatched the leader of the clan but unfortunately, he fell for three consecutive bogeys from the 14th hole onwards. Earlier he held a lead of one shot in the front nine.
Coming back to the winner, he might not have won but when he posted a birdie at the 13th hole of par4 right from a bunker Hoffman stole the show. The story narrates that Hoffman nearly eagled the 11th hole and then pared the 12th making his way for the 13th tee. However, because of the mounting pressure he delivered two mediocre shots and got himself stuck in a green side bunker. The real victory took a toll from here. Hoffman had to get out of the bunker which was uphill meaning if he had to reach the green he had to carefully plan his shot, which he did. He lowered his left shoulders, bent his legs so that he can lower his body and then took a shot. The ball flew right into the hole to give him a lead of two strokes.
Later talking to the press, Charley Hoffman said that it was just another lucky day for him, as the only effort he did was to aim the shot accurately and rest happened by itself. He further added that he had couple of bad shots but even then, he got away with them. According to the experts, yesterday’s round was a complete package of entertainment, especially Hoffman’s performance which was precisely brilliant. His shot from the bunker earned him the final victory and the way he took the shot with the right body language and accurate angle, Hoffman not only stole the show but he also gave a demonstration of what a veteran means in golf.
This is it for the final round of the Deutsche Bank Championship which wrapped its wings yesterday at the venue of TPC Boston. Charley Hoffman was handed over the winner‘s trophy for posting a marvellous score of 22 under and he was followed by Jason Day, Luke Donald and Geoff Ogilvy at the runners up position.
