Golf Update: Hugo is unstoppable says Louis
Destroo
“Hugo is unstoppable”, says Louis Destroo, director of Stellenbosch Golf Club, after Jean Hugo delivered yet another bogey free round to claim an early lead of three strokes during the second round of the Stellenbosch stop on the Vodacom
Business Origins of Golf Tour.
Hugo looked unbeatable as ever. He posted a flawless score of 67 to follow on from his opening round of 66 and is now just one round away from victory at a club where as a boy he was known to have talents of many sports, with a particular
liking for golf.
According to Destroo, he has been watching Hugo’s game since the time they both were kids and he feels that Hugo has improved with time. He said that he has seen Hugo grow up playing on this course as both the boys were in the same school. They used to spend
all of their afternoons on the course.
Meanwhile, Hugo told the reporters that he loved visiting the greens of Stellenbosch as they brought a lot of memories for him. Moreover, he was excited and looking forward to the last round, in which he would face Shaun Norris and Jacques Blaauw at eight
under, followed by Thabang Simon and Louis de Jager at seven under.
Golf Experts believe that Hugo is a fine player whose accurate shots show his command over the game. Although, he seemed to be missing few inches today but his expertise and relevance with the course will surely take him to the top of the leader board on
the final day. Apart from his driving accuracy, Hugo appeared to be uncomfortable with the par fives. 11 under was an excellent score for the day and with the advantage of being on the home ground, Hugo would surely be a tough man to beat in the last round.
This South African professional is certainly aware of the conjectures linked with his victory. Stellenbosch Golf Club at present requires a victory and the only man they can rely on is Jean Hugo. According to the club management, a humongous number of fans
and local settlers are expected to be in the club’s vicinity on Friday. They will be coming to cherish and support their town boy. Apart from the fans, Louis Destroo will also be there to tell stories about his child hood buddy, who used to chip in the fields
near the golf course before deciding to join it.
Jean had a modest upbringing while he started playing with a motley collection of clubs. Every time Destroo and his friends inspected Hugo’s bag, they would find clubs with different makers. Except for the old Bobby Locke two iron which he would never put
away, Hugo never had a problem in exchanging clubs.
Destroo still remembers the way Hugo pulled off some unbelievable shots on the driving range in the past. Well, this was quite evident from his Thursday’s round when he was inches away from holing the second shot at the 17th and the 3rd
hole. Not to forget that both these holes were of par 4 and if some player actually holes- in–one at a par like this, then he is a true player.
This is it for now as Jean Hugo has made his way into the final round of the Stellenbosch stop by posting eight birdies during the second round.
