Golf Update: Jim Furyk notches 2010 FedEx Cup title
Once again an American has taken away the FedEx crown and this time it is Jim Furyk who wrapped up the 2010 FedEx Cup with an eight under.
Jim shot an even par score of 70 on Sunday to claim the top most spot on the leader board. With this, he claimed his third victory of the season at the East Lake Country Club, located on the outskirts of Atlanta.
Before the start of 2010 Tour Championship’s final round, Jim Furyk had told the media persons that instead of wasting his 10 million brain cells on figuring out the possible way of winning the US$ 10 million worth of bonus, he would just focus on winning
it.
However, by the end of the round while it was raining, Jim held the cheque of US$ 1.35 million along with another one, worth US$ 10 million. He has become the proud owner of US$ 11.35 million winner prize of the 2010 FedEx Cup.
According to Jim Furyk, who started the tournament with an 18th standing, he did not bother what the scenario was? Where was Matt Kucher standing? Or how his top-five-finish would affect his ranking? Instead, all he knew was that he had to win
and this was exactly what he did.
The 40-year-old teed off from the front nine. Although, his starting was not quite impressive as he bogeyed the first hole of par-4 but still, he proceeded to the next holes with a par and to counter off its effects, he birdied the sixth hole. Jim settled
in the end with a 35. Then came the second half which was quite the same as the front nine in context of the final score.
Jim flew an early birdie on the eleventh and fifteenth holes but wrapped up the round with two bogeys at the sixteenth and the seventeenth. The deciding hole of the back nine was the eighteenth. It was a par-3 but Jim got himself stuck in the greenside bunker.
Finally, he rolled in a two-and-a-half-foot putt with his cap turned backwards to give an edge to Luke Donald by one.
Revisiting the history; Jim Furyk had an unsettled business with the Tour Championship as seven times earlier also he had tried to conquer it but failed. He finished twice as the runners-up while at five other occasions, he claimed the top-10 finishes. Therefore,
after striking a 35 at the front nine, Jim pumped a fist and roared towards the fans to celebrate his victory. Who says Tiger Woods does it alone?
In the 25-year history of Tour Championship, this is the 15th time when an American has kept the trophy at home. Last year, it was Phil Mickelson, who had earlier also claimed the trophy in 2000. Same goes for the World No. 1 Tiger Woods, who
had won the title in 1999 and then in 2007. By far, he holds the highest margin of victory. In 2007, he won with 23-under which was magnificent.
But this season, Tiger failed to make the cut as he could not fall in the top 30 players of the FedEx point system. Although, Furyk could not match the scores of Woods but still he kept the trophy on the American soil. According to the new champ, it was
a great honor for him to defeat the East Lake, which was known for its long and challenging pars. Furyk had something common with Woods. Tiger missed a playoff session in 2007 while Jim was kicked out of a playoff session at the Barclays.
He was disqualified for missing the pro-am tee time on the first day after his alarm failed to wake him up. Jim entered the four-event playoffs at third in FedEx points but dropped down to the eighteenth. This is it for the winner of the 2010 FedEx Cup,
who got disqualified from the Barclays but still managed to win the title with a bonus of US$ 10 million.
