Golf Update: Jonathan Randolph exempted for The Viking Classic 2010.
The Viking Classic is scheduled from September 27th to October 3rd and has the classic purse of 3,700,000 dollars. This is a PGA Tour, stroke play, event in which the players will tee off on the Annandale Golf Club. Among many players, the current
event would also greet Jonathan Randolph from the Ole Miss Golf All-American team.
Randolph will be playing next week’s event and has already been granted an exemption into the tournament. He is a senior from Brandon, who was given the immunity by Randy Watkins, the Executive director of the Vikings. Randolph earned the exemption because
of his wins and top ten finishes. The golfer has three tournaments in hand and finished in the peak of indexes relating to 5 different events last year from the Rebels side. By a well known magazine, Randolph was positioned on the sixth place when he led the
South Eastern Conference in stroke average.
Given Randolph’s gross record, the tournament director also has the authority to give out 4 spots. Watkins has the power to award four exemptions to 4 players who are not already qualified for the tournament. The qualification earned by these players is
through the normal process which the event follows. As far as Randolph is concerned, if he wasn’t chosen for the gifted exemption, then he wouldn’t be qualified to play for the prize money hence stated.
The announcement of Randolph’s selection had been a stage show of its own. Watkins called Ernest Ross, the Ole Miss Golf Coach on an afternoon few days back and mentioned his intentions to the coach. When the news was put in the picture, Ross gathered Randolph
along with his teammates collectively in a room and set Watkins on speaker phone. The air in the room charged to high apprehension as they waited for Watkins to announce his decision.
A lot of things happened at the same time; Watkins addressed Randolph from the speaker phone and told him that he would want him to play in the Viking Classic next week, Randolph declaring that he accepts before Watkins finished his sentence and his teammates
congratulating him with high enthusiasm.
Watkins in the 1980s was the All-American himself at the Ole Miss and now his son is following his footsteps as well. Watkins had told that Randolph is a golfer who deserved this exemption and this because of his play from the Ole Miss last year till the
U.S. Palmer Cup team in Europe in summer.
When Watkins was addressing Randolph he said that he is one those golfers who had the finest collegiate season in Mississippi and he deserves this spot which is earned well.
Apart from Randolph, Sean O’Hair’s name also popped up from the PGA Tour Head Quarters. Randolph took it as a pleasant surprise which reached him from an email. Form O’Hair’s side, Watkins said that this is a huge thing since this the top six young players
we are talking about.
Other than Sean, Aaron Baddeley was also committed for the Viking Classic 2010. Baddeley is a golfer from Australia who has two victories in his records and he would be appearing at the PGA tournament which will start with a pro-am.
From the previous year, Will Mackenzie will be making an appearance at the field too. The Viking Classic will welcome the 2008 winner, along with several other winners from the past such as D.J. Trahan, Cameron Beckman, Jim Gallagher, Heath Slocum, Chad
Campbell, Greg Kraft and Jr. of Greenwood.
These being the former winners would be playing alongside a number of former Major winners such as John Daly, David Duval, David Thomas, Lee Janzen, Todd Hamilton, Shaun Carl Micheel and Steve Elkington.
