Golf Update: Lee Westwood recovers from injury-to contest 2010 Ryder Cup
“The Englishman, Lee Westwood, is ready to take charge at Celtic Manor”, says the Vice-Captain of the 2010 European Ryder Cup team, Darren Clarke.
While talking to the media at a charity event organized by him in collaboration with the legendary cricketer, Ian Botham, the Vice-Captain said that the world number three was fit enough to give a good challenge to the Americans.
He insisted that Westwood’s presence at the celebrity invitational was a sign of him getting back into form. Earlier, Westwood went missing from the golf scenario due to an injury at a pro-am session few months back. Consequently, he had
to withdraw from the WGC-Bridgestone invitational. However, the player now seems to have recovered and is currently eyeing the 2010 Ryder Cup trophy.
To put away the rumors, Westy decided to make a public appearance at the non-spectator charity event in Archerfield Links. There, he paired up with Rory McIlory to show his fine swings. Clarke seemed delighted over Lee’s early recovery as
he wasn’t expecting it that soon. He added that Monty was the only person who had a strong conviction about Lee and it turned out that he was right.
Meanwhile, this charity event was organized by the foundation jointly run by Darren Clarke and Ian Botham, whose mission is to help the patients with leukaemia and breast cancer. In that context, they intended to raise £100,000. Thereby, a large star attraction
was arranged but no spectators were allowed. According to a local newspaper, Matt Dawson, Michael Vaughan, Sean Fitzpatrick, DJ Spoony, Tom Chaplin, Steve Cram, Mark Nicholas, Kevin Keegan and Austin Healy made a generous contribution for the cause. The event
was further sponsored by Jaguar, Vista Jets, Nike, Maui Jim, Ladbrokes, Adoreum Partners and Billecart-Salmon Champagne.
Moreover, the Europeans seem to have an edge in the 2010 Ryder Cup of being on their home soil. But then also, this fact cannot be ignored that the U.S. team headed by Corey Pavin is strong and would surely give a head to head challenge. Also, they are the
defending Champions. Like Pavin, Clarke also believes that both the teams are somewhat balanced, having combinations of rookies and veterans. Both have experienced and non-experienced players.
But, experts are of the view that the American side has comparatively shown better performance, by winning three of the Playoff series. For instance, Matt Kucher took the Barclays’s crown from the European, Martin Laird. Then, another American, Charlie Hoffman,
stole Luke Donald’s show in the Duetsche Bank Championship and last but not the least; Dustin Johnson won the BMW Championship pushing Paul Casey aside.
