Golf Update: Lee Westwood withdraws from Alfred Dunhill links Championship
Lee Westwood has withdrawn from the second round of the Alfred Dunhill links Championship due to start on the 8th of October due to an injury.
PGA Tour officials have confirmed that the 37-year-old Ryder Cup star won’t be playing in the four-day session owing to a calf injury which emerged on Thursday. Lee Westwood was coming off the downhill slope of the seventh tee at Kingsbarn that a calf pain
started to disturb him. The player struggled through the rest of the day and managed to finish the round with two-under-par which was only four strokes behind early leaders Martin Laird, Ricardo Gonzalez, Maarten Lafeber and Thomas Bjorn.
Lee Westwood was eyeing the world number one title, which is currently tagged with Tiger Woods. If Westwood would have finished in the first two spots of the tournament, he would have easily replaced Tiger Woods for the top spot. Owing to the persisting
calf pain in his right leg, Lee Westwood decided to call his trainer who suggested taking the weekend off. As there were chances of the injury getting worse, the player didn’t want to risk missing the Masters in April next year.
The champion has already missed four tournaments in the current year including the USPGA and he does not want to make things more complicated in his career. Only recently, he played in the Ryder Cup and won three matches which was an achievement in itself.
However, chances are that the player won’t be seen in the Portugal Masters either which will take place next month from the 14th- 17th of November.
While speaking to the media, Westwood said, “The most important thing is to be right physically for the Masters (next April). Steve has told me to take rest and avoid more stress as it might lead to a severe problem which I don’t prefer.”
One down eight to go. Nine of the Ryder Cup winners entered this tournament out of which Lee Westwood is out due to a sudden calf injury and will not figure in the $5000, 000 Alfred Dunhill links Championship.
