Golf Update: María Hernández surges to early lead at 2010 Open de España Femenino
The Spanish chica, María Hernández has surged to an early lead in the first round of the 2010 Open de España Femenino, being held at Costa del Sol Course in Spain. María is followed by a trio of ladies at 65.
Hernández shot a magnificent seven-under 64, which is a brilliant creation of Antonio Garcia Garrido. The course is a regular 18–hole field, stretched on 5906-metre with par-72.
As for the leading lady, she started to tee off from the 10th hole of the back nine. There, she carded two birdies at the 12th and 15th holes, but missed a shot at the challenging uphill 13th green. She completed
her first nine holes with one under 35. However, this wasn’t it for the lovely lady, as she marched on to the next nine holes, posting six birdies to wrap the first day with six-under and a total of 29 strokes.
Just for the record, Maria is still in the first year of her rookie tour. She is one of the youngest golfers from Pamplona to have claimed the card this early. The 24-year-old, who is bent upon becoming the event’s first home winner, seems pleased with her
performance as she holds the credit of hitting some solid shots on the field.
Still, some media reports suggest that Maria was seen struggling on the front nine. The issue appeared to be that she couldn’t manage to tackle the speed on the greens. Although, she consistently tried to hit solid shots but failed to find the greens .But,
she had a lovely pace in the back nine as her strategy to tackle the greens was different. She knew that the greens were soft; thereby it was better to hit the pin. Resultantly, all of her birdies were approximately five to six feet, signifying a very aggressive
game.
Overall, Maria Hernández is doing a good job since this is her first season as a rookie. She claimed her debut LET victory at the Allianz Ladies Slovak Open 2010 in May, this year, while presently she is eyeing to become the first Spanish to win the Open
de España.
Meanwhile, Laura Davies, who won her 75th title in Austria, two weeks back, posted seven birdies and a bogey to claim a spot in the second group. While talking to the reporters, Davies said that she enjoyed her first day in Spain as she hit 17
greens, while missing just one. The English girl is a four time major champion while she is currently third on the LET's Henderson Money List.
By winning this tournament, she will vault her prospects of claiming the Tour's official European No.1 for the eighth time. But still, there are at least four events remaining between her and the title. Davies is not certain of making the cut in all five,
but, she is positive about the Asian and Dubai Events.
Moving to the next lady Alison Walshe, she is also eyeing a victory this week after delivering a bogey-free round with six birdies. Like Maria, she is also on a Rookie tour but as she is an Irish-c*m-American, therefore she is illegible to play in both continents.
In her last European tournament in Austria, she tied for the third place. Next to her is Carin Koch, who holds the record of five top ten finishes this season including the second spot finish at the Lalla Meryem Cup in Morocco. The Swede is ready to claim
her fourth career title this year. She carded seven birdies and one bogey in her first round.
Finally, 2010 Open de España Femenino has entered its second round with María Hernández in the lead. She is followed by Laura Davies, Carin Koch and Alison Walshe. The second round was scheduled to start at 8.45 am today which means that soon the top 60
players on the leader board will come up as well to make headlines.
