Golf Update: Martin Kaymer takes away the 92nd USPGA trophy, at Whistling Straits, Wisconsin
Was he on the betting list? No, but he is still the winner. The German, Martin Kaymer seized the trophy of the 92nd USPGA championship on Sunday, after smashing 11 under in the final round that took place on Sunday, 15th August, 2010.
The final round of the event that took place at the magnificent linked -style course of Whistling Straits, Wisconsin, fell in its final folds, when the three holes playoff decided the winner. The playoff took place between Bubba Watson and Martin Kaymer, after they were held tied for the first position.
As for the winner, he took two souvenirs with him; one the prize amount of $7.5 million, two the entrance into the Ryder cup team! What a glory for the winner? The other names that were seen at the top of the leader board were Bubba Watson, who scored 68 in the final round, followed by Dustin Johnson and Rory Mc Ilroy with 10 under each.
As for Dustin Johnson, the top 5 of the leader board has been penalized, as he was found grounding his clubs in the sand bunker before hitting his second shot. Dustin Johnson said in his defence, that he did not realize the presence of a sand bunker or else he wouldn’t have done it. The result was a penalty of two strokes, which knocked Johnson out of a three- hole playoff into a tie for the fifth position with a score of 73. As a token of remembrance, this is the second time for Dustin Johnson, when he has ruined his chances to take the Claret Jug home. The last time when a somehow similar story happened, it was the final round of the US Open in June.
However, the players who went for the playoff were Martin Kaymer and Bubba Watson. Both had a score of 11-under-par with an aggregate of 277, and they were one stroke ahead of Rory Mc Ilroy and Zach Johnson. The playoff itself was very interesting. It started with Bubba Watson, who took the first tee shot for the 10th hole and settled with a 2 feet birdie putt. However, Martin Kaymer did not stay calm and he responded with a 15-foot putt on the 17th hole. Both the boys moved to the 18th hole, where Bubba Watson took a shot and it struck a water hazard with a double bogey 6 posted on his scorecard. Good for Martin Kaymer, who was stuck on a rough with a bogey 5, he won by 1 stroke.
Quite likely, with Martin Kaymer’s victory, this is the second time when Europeans have won twice on a PGA tour in three consecutive majors. Earlier it was Graeme McDowell's, who won at the US Open in June this year.
Moving forward, when asked from the winner how he felt out there in his last moments, he replied, “calm and confident”. This was the same response that was given by the analysts as well. According to them, Martin Kaymer seemed very nervous in the regular rounds, but as soon as he reached the play-off, it seemed as he changed completely. It was weird but he was calm and confident.
The final round of the USPGA championship that was taking place at the Whistling Straits, Wisconsin has wrapped up! The winner has been declared and it is the 25-year-old, Martin Kaymer. The runner-up is Bubba Watson, with a difference of only 1 stoke, followed by Dustin Johnson, Zach Johnson and Rory McIlroy at the third position. According to the experts, the event fell in its final moments the way it was predicted. The winner was a player whom no one was expecting, although Bubba Watson was expected to be in the top group and so he was. There were a couple of surprises in the 4- day event that included Tiger Woods coming back to life with a 2 under but unfortunately, he could not defend his title. This however, was no surprise at all.
