Golf Update: Martin Kaymer wants hole-in-one for 2011
The top gun of Europe has something else on mind for 2011 after a triumph in Race To Dubai. This time, he aims to shoot hole-in-one.
His list of achievements will not stop, if one starts naming them. He won Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship earlier in the year and took his charm to undulating fairways of Whistling Straits where he became a PGA champion. A month later,
he won with the edge of four strokes in KLM Open and became the first European to win thrice on the tour. Three early victories took him to Celtic Manor where he represented Europe in Ryder Cup and a week later, he carded his fourth title at Dunhill Links
in Scotland. The outstanding season ended for him with the title of winner of Race To Dubai i.e. number one golfer of Europe.
After all these victories and titles, Kaymer has one block left vacant in his cards and that is hole-in-one. The mentioned stroke is a rare shot which represents the hole done with a single stroke. The shot requires utmost accuracy,
which is why few players manage to achieve it.
The 25-year-old could not attain that in 2010, but he vows to get it locked in his bag in the coming year. He expressed his desire in an interview, saying, "I've never made one in my life, so that would be nice in 2011. Obviously, I try to play as good as
possible every week and if it happens, it happens. But if it doesn't happen I'm sure and I hope that I will have the chance in a few years again. I know that I can do it. I always felt I had the potential to become one of the best players in the world, but
no one would have thought that I could make it this quick.”
Apart from that, he also hopes to win a major and dethrone Lee Westwood, who is the current world number one. He added, "I would like to prove that I'm Europe's No. 1 and take that challenge on again. It would be nice to win a major again, preferably the
British Open, our only major that we have in Europe. World No. 1 is one of my goals, but I had a lot of things to think about this year, especially after the PGA Championship. So to be honest with you, the number one in the world is still too far away to realise
for me.”
Martin Kaymer got what he wanted for 2010; let us see what he has in store for the next year.
