Golf Update: Martin Kaymer’s win juggles the World Rankings
Martin Kaymer’s win at the HSBC Dubai World Championship hoisted the German to number two along with making many other changes in the World Rankings. With Martin being number two, the fourteen times major championship winner, Tiger Woods is now number three.
Woods hasn’t been outside the top two since October of 2004. The only rank that remained constant was of course the rank of the leader. Yes, the number one player. Englishman, Lee Westwood is still the number one player.
With Westwood being number one and Kaymer being number two, the year 1993 seems to be recurring when another English-German pair was atop the rankings. Eighteen years ago, the English Nick Faldo and German Bernard Langher were also at first and second place
respectively.
Graeme McDowell is still at number four, whereas American player Steve Stricker is ranked number five. The American golf legend, Phil Mickelson is now ranked number six. Mickelson is also to make his first PGA start this weekend. Phil, had more than twelve
chances to surpass Woods as number one, but couldn’t avail any of the opportunities.
Finishing second place at the Abu Dhabi Championship, Rory McIlroy is at number seven. Following Rory is Jim Furyk, Paul Casey and Luke Donald in 8th, 9th and 10th respectively. The South African player Ernie Els is now ranked
number eleven with Ian Poulter dropping to number 12.
With all the changes, the downshift of Woods is obviously the most poplar one. Last year, Tiger lost his number one rank that he owned since five years. Losing in a playoff to Graeme McDowell in the Chevron World Challenge, Tiger also lost the chance to
manage a single win in 2010. Due to the scandals and controversies, the player was involved in 2010; Wood’s career has gone downhill since November 2009. Last year was the first time during his career that he didn’t win a single tournament.
Obviously, going down yet another spot isn’t good news, but Tiger hasn’t even played in 2011. Woods will start his season at the Farmers Insurance Open. Having gone through so much, Tiger is determined to get his career back on track.
The world rankings are always changing and there is no saying who will be on top the next day. Hence, all this keeps the game of golf all the more exciting.
