Golf Update: Martin Maritz is walking over the moon!
The 2011 Joburg Open initiated yesterday at the Royal Johannesburg and the Kensington Golf Club and witnessed Martin Maritz ruling the leader board.
The event began at the 13th of January and will continue till the 16th of this month, sharing its first two rounds with the east and west arenas of the earlier stated GCs.
The South African carded a moving 62 after the first round of the tournament which pushed him at the top of the leader board. The shoot thus set Maritz for an early lead over the contention as he carded his impressive 9 under par.
Playing at the East course, Maritz score displayed an early challenge for the other golfers on field. The 33-year-old golfer managed to display a blemish free round and collected zero bogeys in total.
According to statistics, the former U.S club professional earned a place with Tyrone Mordt on the leader board from the West GC. The par-71 course handed Mordt a score of 62 which displayed a minus 9 for the shared lead.
For Maritz, the round had been promising since its inception. Using an 8-iron at the start of the tournament, the golfer managed to card two magnificent birdies from hole number one and two.
The third hole ended after a risky par putt which was saved just a few inches with the help of rescue shot.
As for the 4th and 5th holes, they went smooth. Ending with a par of 4 and 3, the hole following them gifted the South African golfer another birdie. The third birdie of the day appeared at the par 5, sixth hole that set a stable pace
for the rest of the tournament.
“The round had been just magical. I’m walking over the moon” said Maritz.
With his putter doing only a small amount of work, Maritz carded another birdie at the 8th hole thus completing his exciting outbound play. The 33-year-old carded an inspiring 32 at this stage of the event which prepared him to grab 5 more birdies
from the next stage.
As for the inbound, it ended with a 30. With birdies from hole number 23, 14, 15 and the 18th, the leader made an impressive ‘blue-mark free’ card from round one of the tournament and carded a 62 to rule the leading cult.
“I’m not worried about the weekend. I just want to indulge in one of the best rounds I have ever played” said the first round leader.
Update:
Maritz will begin the second round of the Joburg Open at 08:20 GMT while his lead has been currently surpassed by Thomas Aken. Aken teed-off early and has a minus 3 through 6 holes of the West course.
