Golf Update: Matteo Manassero has great expectations from his captain.
European Golf’s young star, the Italian Matteo Manassero appreciated Colin Montgomerie’s talent and expertise in the game of golf. Montgomerie will be leading Matteo and seven other members as the European team in the Royal Trophy. The fifth edition of the
Royal trophy will take black at the Black Mountain Golf Club in Thailand.
Montgomerie will be the player and captain against what is being talked about as the best Asian team assembled till now. Last year, the Asians had a heart breaking defeat which led to be all geared up this time. Last year, Europeans won 8.5 to 7.5 when Swedish
Henrik Stenson holed the winning putt. That was great news for the Europeans as they lost 10-6 to Asia in 2009.Manassero, being only seventeen years old, will be the youngest player in the field. He thinks that Monty can be a great captain and a player as
well.
"Colin practiced with me, Pablo Martin and Rhys Davies- the three youngest members of our team - and trust me, he showed he still has plenty of game,"
said Matteo. "He had an outrageous birdie on the 16th where he holed a monster putt - but he called it first, predicting the break perfectly. It was very impressive."
Even though Colin didn’t play much golf last year, he still had an amazing year as he was the strategy planner behind the Europeans win at the Celtic Manor last October. The Europeans regained the Ryder Cup from America and truly dominated golf in 2010.
Montgomerie said that the he just wants to be competitive, being 47 years old. At this age, playing decent is surely a good thing when compared to Matteo’s performance who is 30 years younger than him. Colin, specifically mentioned China’s Liang Wenchong
in the opposing team due to their interaction in last year’s event. In the singles match, Colin crucially halved the match against Liang. Monty recalled that playing in so many Ryder Cups; he now knows the importance of every half point or every single point.
With the match becoming so intense the previous year, Wenchong is looking forward to teeing off against him. Liang hopes to be the first player to defeat Colin. Monty, however, is determined to not let his fellow Europeans down. He said that even though
it isn’t the Ryder Cup, he is still representing Europe.
With all the players eager to win, the Royal Trophy will surely be an interesting one to follow.
