Golf Update: Miguel Jimenez scores 61 in second round of the Omega European Masters
Miguel Angel Jimenez posted the lowest score of 61 in Round 2 at the Omega European Masters in Switzerland on Friday.
Jimenez has been on the European tour for the last 27 years and for the very first time, he posted a record low score which stunned very many. He delivered two eagles and six birdies in the second round of the Omega European Masters at the Crans-sur-Sierre Alpine course. He finished the round with 10 under par 61 to take the lead by three strokes over Edoardo Molinari.
This is the 22nd visit of the 46-year-old Jimenez to the course which stands surrounded by the beautiful snow capped Alps. If he goes on to win this tournament, it will be his third success in Switzerland which is a record in itself. According to experts, this feat is achievable as Jimenez is playing with a lot of poise and form. His recent tournaments approve of this statement. Jimenez posted a 68 at the Johnnie Walker Championship in the second round to take the lead and later got the wild card from Colin Montgomerie for the Ryder Cup as well. Secondly, a look at his statistics over the last six years shows that the Spaniard has won 10 out of 17 tournaments that he played in all European tours. This is his 535th tour event as he has established a new record of playing for five weeks in a row. Despite that, he started the round with three early birdies and an eagle at the ninth hole.
Moreover, predictions are rife that Jimenez might touch 59. The player had almost touched that number on Friday if he had carded two birdies at the 16th tee. However, Jimenez had other plans as he decided to play it safe when he completed the rest of the back nine with par.
Moving forward to the next top scorer, Edoardo Molinari posted an eleven under to claim the second highest spot on the leader board. The 29-year-old Italian got the good news from Colin Montgomerie a few days back to bolster his confidence prior to this tournament. Edoardo Molinari was given the wild card after winning the Johnnie Walker Championship last week at the Gleneagles. According to experts, Molinari is working on his game and it can be seen from his score of two rounds that he has improved from 66 in the first round to a 65 in the second. Being a two-time winner in this season, a sense of planning could be seen in his game. He had already set the target of producing a bogey-free round and this is what he did. He hit the ball well and a controlled his temper without any difficulty.
Molinari is not alone at the top second spot. He is accompanied by his compatriot, Matteo Manassero, a 17-year-old teenager who was the leader of the first round on Thursday. He posted a score of 67 on carding an eagle at the 15th hole of par 5. Matteo turned professional in this year’s Italian Open in May after winning the British Amateur Championship. If this Italian finishes in the top five, then he will be earning an exemption from the Q-school. Moreover this is the sixth event in which he has managed to make the cut. He will be attending the Dunhill Links Championship which is taking place in Scotland from next week.
This is it for the day that officially belongs to Miguel Angel Jimenez as he posted the lowest score of his European tour career with an amazing 61.Speculations are that Jimenez might be the next winner of the tournament but again there are some fine players on the field like Padraig Harrington and Rhys Davies but so far none of them have shown a good performance at the course which triumphs with their names and their victories which they have record here a long time back.
