Golf Update: Nate Smith's trek of the 18th  at the WNB championship 2010.
The match was tight with the trio fighting for the WNB championship but the end favoured Nate Smith as Jobe’s depressing bogey at the end placed him out of the trio lead.
The WNB Golf Classic was held from 20th September to the 26th which contained a purse of $525,000 and a winning share of $94500. Smith won the championship with a distance of 35 feet from the hole. He attained the win with a 2 stroke
lead over the three golfers in Texas namely, Fabian Gomez, Alistair Presnell along with Brandt Jobe.
Smith started his round with a 12 under in his card. His first hole gifted him a birdie. His second hole was rather wild as he played his provisional in a birdie and sent his ball in the bush-herb mesquite. The ball landed right, a rattle snake moved and
Smith hurried off. After the errant shot Smith told that he heard a rattle snake at his second hole and although he earned a birdie in provisional but overall it was a bogey.
The twenty seven year old also earned a birdie at the 4th, 5th and 8th and before Smith played his winning putt, hole number 12 and 13 from the back nine also awarded him a birdie.
The trek of the 18th ended with three things; the ball reaching the hole, the cheers going eccentric and Smith winning the WNB championship 2010.
At the first shot of the 18th hole, Smith’s drive sent the ball to the trees after Brandt saw a lip out of his ball. A situation like this required him to improvise a shot that would still keep in the lead. The ball and the flagstick had a distance
of 221 yards and it required a rather positive opening. Smith and his caddy found the opening and used the 3-iron which sent the ball rightwards in a 30 yard flight. His shot earned him a better result than he expected; his ball was only 35 feet from the hole.
The ball travelled from west to the east towards the hole by covering a distance of 35 feet. The sun was high in the sky and so was the crowd’s cheer. Smith pushed his ball towards the 18th hole and waited for it to reach its destination, the
level of noise at the Midland country club raised higher and higher as the ball rolled to the hole. It seemed like Smith’s putt worked its magic.
According to Smith, he played the putt with a little doubt. He said that although the stroke was confident in itself, Smith thought that it might have a lip out. The 18th putt played by the something year old enabled Smith to stand at the minus
18 and claim that Sunday with his name.
Smith says that after winning the 18th hole he realized that the putt was pure in nature and that’s all he can ask for. The something year old states that to have a putt to win on 18 is something more than he can ask for.
The man from Santa Monica earned his first win of the Tour along with a total dollar amount of $ 94,500. Other than these honours, Smith moved from the spot number 78 to the 25th place in the money index. Those golfers who end up in the top 25
at the end of the spell would be eligible for the next year’s Tour Cards.
Before Smith played his winning shot, it looked as if Jobe would be the one to rule the event. He stated his round with a 12 under. He was trailing the leader Darren Stiles with a difference of two strokes. To make a turn in the 32 with a 4 under, Jobe managed
to play birdies at the 2nd, 3rd, 4th as well as the ninth. His hole number 12 placed him to minus 17 when Smith was chasing him with his Black magic putter.
Smith says that his win at the WNB Golf Classic is one of the greatest accomplishments he has attained as a professional till now. He says that he didn’t see the leader board all day which is till he hit his drive number eighteen.
