Golf Update: PGA needs the Tiger -loathed- Woods back
The news may have subdued, the gossip may have hushed and Tiger Woods may be thinking of moving on, but considering the past weeks, he might think otherwise.
The past weeks haven’t been much of a happy-go-lucky nature for many fans out there. Those who are still with Tiger Woods and support and cherish him have realized that getting into a controversy won’t take much of your time, but it would take forever to
get out of. If there are still any fans left out there by his side, they may say it has been a tough week for him as expected. His entry into the most loathed list of jocks and the $250,000 auction mark the previous week’s activities.
On last Sunday, the News faced a certain ripple and then a huge tide. The ripple was by the Eagle quarterback Michael Vick and the tide was by our very own, Tiger Woods making the list of most-loathed athletes in America. Michael, in a time of four years,
has played his first NFL start in the Philadelphia Eagles and led them to a victory.
In the land of marketing, some are ruthless but many are found in the boat of creativity. One organization displayed the same behaviour and charted a favourability rating which shook the already bewildered golf masses. According to last week’s Q Scores Company
ratings, a rather extreme fan opinion was collected. The American consumers rated athletes like Tiger Woods, Terrell Owens, Chad Ochocinco and Kobe Bryant as most loathsome.
The detestable athlete, Woods, thus rated here may have made a company in Oregon not-so-happy since Woods has been an endorser for them at one point in the way.
The loathsome individual thus listed, also got his name involved in an auction of his set of golf clubs last week. The clubs used by Woods is reportedly said to be used by him to win the Grand Slam in 2000-01. They were auctioned at an original asking dollar
amount of $250,000. Steve Mata, who is the former employee at the PGA Tour equipment van, stated that these clubs were provided to him by Tiger Woods certain years ago and said that they had been used at the Grand Slam which was known as the Tiger-slam event.
These statements were denied by Woods later on and eventually led Mata taking the lie detector test. However, Mata passed the test and he got $57,242 relating to 11 irons with the winning bidder standing unidentified. With Mata passing the lie detector test
and Woods denying the fact that he never used the clubs, many were seen perplexed.
In a total of 12 events that were held in 2010, Woods has played only two top 10s which took place in majors. However, last year Woods managed to play 17 starts which included fourteen top 10s and 6 wins. This week, Orlando welcomes the thirty four year
old who is preparing for the next week’s much anticipated Ryder Cup event due to be held in Wales.
The PGA Tour will be holding its all-glimmered affair without its all-time glitter and now with Woods out of the PGA line up, we can expect anything.
No matter how many polls are carried out and no matter what price is plastered on the clubs, a reality check is always good. This time the reality check is a stark reminder by many casual golf followers out there and as expected, the only ball grinding action
they love is by Woods. The PGA Tour is having a strong tussle with the NFL, baseball’s pennant races for attention and they would definitely love their swinging, grimacing Woods back.
