Golf Update: Phil bids good bye to the Barclays Golf Tournament
Phil Mickelson kissed good bye to the ninth chance of overtaking the world number 1 at the Ridge wood country club, where the third round of the Barclays is in progress.
The FedEx playoffs are in its running form sending an SOS signal to all the players who are interested in making a cut into the Ryder cup team, which is the last chance of survival. However, players like Padraig Harrington have picked the sign but exceptions like Phil Mickelson are out of the series, hence saying good bye to the Ryder cup and the world number 1 position of the official world golf ranking.
Phil Mickelson technically had several chances to overtake Tiger Woods’ but each time he had some problem, either it was the weather, or it was his health issue. To be precise, Phil Mickelson had nine events lined up to capture the most prestigious Number one title and the factor that was running in the favour of the player was the terrible performance of Tiger Woods’. Tiger woods have been the lowest scorer ever since his personal life issues took a toll and came in front of the media. The worst example that can be put forward to justify this statement is the venue of the Firestone country club, where Tiger finished the second last however, he might have gone worst if Lee Westwood would not have taken the with drawl after experiencing pain in his shoulder. Despite this advantage, Phil remained unsuccessful throughout the season.
Coming to Phil’s performance, he started the round very slow; in fact, the word which the media is using is cautious. As he was deliberant with the driver but very slow with the long shots and was seen tipping them from corner to corner. Where the front nine finished with a double bogey at the last hole, the back nine started with a bogey. The overall impression that could be extracted out of the whole game was bogeys all over the score card. As a token for the memory only a week back, newspapers and websites were flooded with the caption that Ridgewood Country Club was one of the favourite courses of the player, as he held the record of some spectacular victories there. Seems like Heath Slocum the defending champion of the tournament, was right as he said that the course had some changes since he played there last time in 2008.
Moreover, the world number two left the venue without facing the media. Although a statement was issued which said that he realizes the fact that he played terribly and immaturely on the course, although he was very fond of the venue especially it’s greens. What to say now, Phil after losing on the course which is considered as one of the easiest courses in the world!
Coming to the stats of the 40-year –old American, his driving accuracy was 53.6 percent, which is quite modest but it did not help him when he used two putts to finish a hole on the greens. According to the experts, this was one of the worst games of the golfer and at some point, it seemed that a rookie was out there trying his luck on the worn out green left by a veteran golfer. However, there was a factor that can be linked to this vague results and that is his health, as earlier Phil told the press that he was suffering through psoriatic arthritis, hence it was difficult for him to make back swings and long shots.
At the end, the bettors who had their money blocked on the bet that Phil Mickelson will snatch Tiger Woods title of number one away from him are doomed as the world number two is out of the playoffs but he will be seen in the upcoming event of Deutsche Bank Championship that is taking place next week in Boston. Despite being out of the tournament, we love you Phil!
