Golf Update: Poulter's claims he will take number one Lee Westwood down
Ian Poulter seems to have a magic globe in which he foresees the future. What he has to say at Dubai World Championship 2010? Poulter is making explicit statements in friends and in media regarding his achievements and this time he says that he will be the
one holding the trophy in Dubai. Chances are that the prediction comes true as it did thrice before.
At the lunch table in Hong Kong Golf Club last week, Poulter claimed in the presence of Graeme McDowell, Rory McIlroy and a couple of friends that he would win the title and to his luck he did. He repeated the same statement in front of a local news channel.
He said, "I told the boys I'd win the Hong Kong Open. I actually told them I'd win by five, which was a bit tongue-in-cheek . . . a little bit of a dig."
The veteran won, but could not meet the bid precisely. He won by one- stroke and not by five-strokes.
Before the second round, the 34-year-old repeated that he would attain the score of 13-under-par, which he did. His Ryder Cup friends became suspicious of the player and in the turmoil; Graeme Mc Dowell announced that he would try controlling his own ball.
That was the best he could do.
The most noticeable recent example of Poulter's amazing ability for positive thinking came on the Monday at the Ryder Cup. Englishman announced that he would chalk up a point against Matt Kuchar in his singles match, which he eventually did. For good measure,
he repeated his claim in an interview with the press, stepped out of the clubhouse in the presence of fog and destroyed Kuchar by 4&3. Kuchar topped the US Money List in 2010 and was the winner of the Barclays Championship held in September.
Poulter took a lot of stick two years back for saying that if he had paid more attention to his game, he would have been second to Tiger Woods in the world rankings. After elevating to world number five after the magnificent victory in Accenture Match Pl
ay Championship, Poulter faltered back to a lower rank. However, the champion climbed back the greasy pole and attained the number 11th after the phenomenal success on the weekend in Hong Kong.
However, once again the resident of Florida claims that he will be the one standing on the winner’s podium. This time he is aiming for the world number one rank, which is currently residing with Lee Westwood. Poulter has a fair idea that if a player maintains
a good form for eight successive weeks, he automatically climbs the top.
Speaking to the press Poulter said, "If anybody in the top 10 plays well for a period of eight weeks, they have a great chance to move up in the rankings. There are big tournaments to be played week in, week out and huge points for that. I am not saying,
'I'm going to get to No.1. I tried that once before and it did not work. I'll just try winning next week and see how high I can go."
Moreover, he has also claimed himself as the greatest opponent of Tiger Woods. The statement is well proved with his actions at Celtic Manor. He was playing either an X-box game of Ryder Cup in which he chose Tiger Woods in singles or rest of the time he
was found claiming that Tiger was finished. Knowingly, Woods is no more on the list of number one; Poulter is still obsessed with the idea that he will override him.
Whether Ian Poulter wins the last tournament of the European tour or he manages to seize a spot in top five, the fact will remain vaulted that Poulter will not be successful in overriding Westwood.
