Golf Update: Retief Goosen announces his New Year's resolution
Retief Goosen will be charging the East London Golf Club with full force this season.
The Africa Open will be starting from the 6th of January 2011 and will be welcoming the likes of Goosen, who is ready to step back into the winners circle, representing the South African front.
His New Year’s resolution? Grab victories.
Considering 2010, the 41-year-old golfer played a solid spell and moved from position number 19
to 16 at the world ranking list. Goosen managed to collect top 5 finishes six times and the top 10 finishes 14 times despite his two-time injury break. However, the South African achieved zero victories last year and last recorded the Transitions Championship
triumph in the year 2009.
“I think I’m heading back as a defending champion of sorts, considering my skip from last year” said Goosen.
The 4-time Asian Tour winner refused to appear at the 2010 event backed up by the European and the Sunshine Tour so that he could play at the season opening SBS Championship.
With no win in 2010, the iceman said that restarting from East London is the best venue possible.
“I think the tournament is just great and as for the golf course, I don’t think otherwise either. I like it because the course suits my way of play. After my win in 2009, they improved the greens there and they’re great I heard” he said.
The 2-time US Open champion also considers the Africa Open as an event that could give his play an accelerated start.
“My aim is to step back into the winning cult” said Goosen.
Regarding his winless past season, the man with an ice cool demeanour said that he had been roaming near the winning spot throughout the spell. He said that although there had been opportunities the whole season, he just couldn’t put together a few good
rounds.
“The year was consistent, but the accumulated rounds were much of a struggle for me” said Goosen.
‘The Goose’ has a total of 44 professional victories in his record and has the aim of improving his striking abilities to fulfil his New Year’s goal.
Goosen’s attack will be defended by his fellow compatriot Charl Schwartzel at the Africa Open and will also be competing against the recent winner of the Open champion, Louis Oosthuizen.
“I’m looking forward to a good week’s play” said the Iceman.
