Golf Update: Rocco rocks CordeValle with the 4th eagle
“Do you believe what just happened out there? I have a job again,” acclaimed Rocco Mediate after holing an eagle in the par-4, 17th.
Rocco Mediate bogeyed five holes in the last round of the Frys.com Open, at CordeValle, San Martin, California, but no one cared! He raised his sand wedge and smashed a shot at the 16th to hole a birdie. He once again took the posture of that
of the winner and aimed a putt; this time it was an eagle. Rocco Mediate won the Frys.com Open with 15-under-par.
The crowd was screaming with the entertainment that was being provided on the CordeValle Golf Club. Rocco Mediate holed out the forth eagle of the tournament to declare himself invincible. The eagle fiesta began on the first day when the 47-year-old aimed
a shot and it went right into the par-3, third hole. The next day was even more surprising when the champ rolled an eagle putt on the par-4, fourth hole. However, the feast did not stop here and before wrapping up the $5 million purse event, Rocco rolled another
eagle. The Pennsylvania took one stroke lead at the 11thhour over Bo Van Pelt and rookie Alex Prugh.
The 47-year-old claimed his sixth PGA Tour title along with the winner cheque of $900,000 and a two-year tour exemption. He was chased by Prugh (69), and Van Pelt (71).Both the players won $440,000 worth of prize money. Next on the list was the Ryder Cup
player, Rickie Fowler. The 22-year-old was once again seen in orange gear; his symbol of being confident.
According to the critics if it would not have been the first round score of Rocco, Rickie Fowler would have been the winner. The player seemed to grow in last three weeks, especially during the Ryder Cup. He picked up three birdies in the closing holes to
wrap the round at a 69.
Fowler was overwhelmed with the supportive crowd. He told this to the press. He said,
“I was walking down the stairs and I heard the roar. I couldn't see the green but I could tell who the roar was for. It was pretty loud."
The same feeling was experienced by the winner. Apart from the roaring support, he was confident with what he was doing. When the runners-up birdied the final hole, Rocco Mediate and his caddie Matthew Achatz decided to eagle the ball in and this is what
they did. After holing the shot, Mediate did not follow the ball; instead, he turned around and thanked his caddie and the crowd. It was an example of sheer confidence.
Speaking to the press Mediate said that he did not have words to explain it, but he noticed that every single object pushed him to victory. That included the course, competitors and his putting.
However, the weather was not on Mediate’s side; it was consistently raining on the last day. Mediate experiences problem with his back in wet and cold conditions. He was found saying that the weather was harsh on him, the way it was for rest of the field.
His back became stiff: in result, he could hardly move. Rain did not bother the 47-year-old for long, as the sun came out when he walked to the 14th tee.
This is it for the Sunday showdown in which Rocco Mediate smashed an eagle at the 17th hole to surge into victory. After 2002, this was the very first time for the player to fire back to back eagles in all four rounds of a tournament. Rocco Mediate
plans to celebrate his phenomenal victory in Las Vegas after which he will head to Disney. Well that is a good way to spend some solid cash of $900,000.
