Golf Update - Round 1 of WGC-Bridgestone Invitational
Louis Oosthuizen qualified the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, which is being held in Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. However, the owner of the Claret jug could not make it to the top position, in the first round.
Seems like the South African golfer was not all that ready for the win. Perhaps the only thing running through his mind during the game was how to make use of Claret Jug in a better way. Despite his fellow-golfer Stewart Cinks innovative way of using the jug by pouring barbeque sauce in it on the night of 4th July; Louis Oosthiizen was more than elevated to have the possession of the jug.
After winning the Open Championship at St. Andrews last month, the 27-year-old looks at the trophy with a different perspective. For him, the Claret Jug is a sacred souvenir. Thanks to the Claret jug, he made the cut in WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, 2010.
However, his first round at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational was not satisfactory at all. He carded a 2-over 72 at Firestone Country Club.
Earlier when Louis Oosthuizen got news of the Invitational, he got thrilled about the upcoming event. Not only was he showered with phone calls from fans, media and the golf fraternity; he looked forward to making it to the top. With golfers like Graeme Mc Dowell playing at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, the event was something to look forward too.
US Open winner, Graeme McDowell managed to finish round of 66 with six birdies in row in the opener round of the Bridgestone Invitational. Standing second to Bubba Watson, the winner of the first round, McDowell is sharing the position with three other players, Kenny Perry, Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott.
Graeme Mc Dowell has been on his feet since his victory in the US opens. Right after the big event, he made an appearance at the J.P. McManus Pro-Am and the Scottish Open. Since he was unable to cope up with the immense mental and physical stress that arose from the hectic routine, he turned to Padraig Harrington, three-time major champion to seek some counselling.
Padraig Harrington is a winner of three major championships; one in 2007 and two in 2008. He is not considered the top player of golf. During the Invitational it seemed from as if he was trying to play safe. After witnessing Tiger Woods missing out on the easiest hole, no player would like to spoil their chances of winning.
The defending champion and the seven-times winner of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, Tiger Woods bogeyed the first two holes slimming down the chances of his victory. The number 1 golfer, according to the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), finished the 1st round with four-over, putting his title to a threat.
According to the media reports the first possible candidate to steal Tiger’s crown is Phil Mickelson, who is currently number 2 on the leader board and finished with 4-under par 66. Golf enthusiasts are holding their breaths as the Invitational is being aired to different parts of the world.
Anyhow tiger was not alone in delivering a terrible show. Many other big names were seen at the bottom of the leader board. These names are Stewart Cink 2 over, Stuart Appleby 4 over, and Lee Westwood 1 over. All three of the golfers are a legend in themselves. They have won at least one major but with an amazing lead. However all three don’t seem to cope with the course itself. In fact according to the experts, a lot of perfect putting was expected from Lee West wood which he failed to deliver. On the other hand Stuart Apple by, the winner of Greenbrier Classic hit 50 greens in regulation which was indeed good, but a few birdies down the lane could have got him to the top.
To wrap it up, the first round of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational is finished and the results are here. Bubba Watson is in the lead, Tiger Woods is on the 70th, whereas Louis Oosthuizen is the 52nd but very happy to make it to the big event.
According to the experts, the game has just begun and the memorable part is yet to come, therefore it’s hard to decide whether the players at the bottom of the leader board will remain at their positions or smash their up.
