Golf Update: Ryder Cup 2010- American team reaches Celtic Manor
The United States Ryder Cup team has taken off for Celtic Manor under the lead of Captain Corey Pavin. Excited to face the Europeans, the players will arrive for the Ryder Cup which will start on October 1st. The captains of both the team, Corey Pavin and
Colin Montgomerie are expected to give press conferences later at the Celtic Manor Resort at Newport.
The arrival of the team will surely make the build up to the event all the more exciting. The Ryder Cup is scheduled to go on till October 3rd. With the best American golfers teeing off against the Best from Europe, this event is sure to attract
a huge turnout of golf fans. A worldwide audience is excited to see Tiger Woods and other superstars compete for the cup.
Along with amazing personalities out there on the field, the Ryder Cup will be viewed by known international visitors as well. European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and the Prince of Wales are expected to be at the event. Prince Charles will
have lunch with the two team captains and also have a tour of the breathtaking resort on Wednesday which is the last practice day.
Not only will Wales be visited by royalty or Sports celebrities, but also entertainment world’s big shots will be there. Dame Shirley Bassey, Catherine Jenkins and Catherine Zeta Jones will perform in the Welcome to Wales Concert.
Even though with so many international celebrities, this week is more about the golf super stars, their skills and the game they bring with them. On Tuesday, the golf professionals will give free lessons to the audience at the Celtic Manor Course. The manager
of coach education and the PGA in Wales, Gareth Lewis, thinks that the PGA Game Improvement Centre will be among the most famous things at Celtic Manor. He said that these coaching practices are available for golf fans of all ages. The fans can have their
games looked at; they can gain useful insight from the professional and improve things that they need to.
"It means golf fans coming to Celtic Manor can not only enjoy the drama of seeing the likes of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy in action but also receive some expert tuition on their own games from some of the leading coaches in Wales,” said Lewis.
The Ryder Cup has not only got the international audience occupied, but also the people of Wales can’t contain their excitement for the event. This event brought good news for the children of Cardiff and Newport. All schools in both the cities will be closed
on Friday to decrease the traffic congestion and also give the little ones chance to enjoy such a memorable event in their city. About 45,000 people are estimated to show up on each of the day of the competition.
With so much going on in the beautiful cities, the government has spent about £27m on projects related to infrastructure and transport. In order to provide a comfortable stay and easy access to the games, the transport links to the Celtic Manor site have
been worked on as well. The previous First Minister Rhodri Morgan, who played a major role in the bid, tried to cover up as to how much money was spent on the tournament. He argued that not all the money is spent by Sir Terry Matthews, and the government
has done their part in promoting this as well.
The basic dilemma for the former minister is that the Americans have heard of Ireland and Scotland, why is it that Wales is so unpopular in the West. The Welsh government including the minister are really hoping to elevate the popularity of the Country through
this major golf event.
Now with the American team and the captain arriving, it is pretty obvious that many American golf fans will come to Wales as well. It is certain that after the Ryder Cup is over, Wales would definitely be recognized by the whole golfing community.
