Golf Update: Ryder Cup 2010- Tactics America should use at Celtic Manor
No one can ever forget the amazing victory America had two years ago at Valhalla. In the 2008 Ryder Cup, under the captaincy of Paul Azinger, when America took the cup home by defeating the Europeans 16.5 to 11.5. Ever since 2002, this will be their first
chance for a second straight victory. The simplest way to victory is to play better than the other team. This year the teams are headed by Colin Montgomerie for the Europeans and Corey Pavin for the Americans. Even though Corey is an amazing player and surely
a wise captain, there are certain tricks that the defending champions could use.
One thing the Americans could make sure of is that they have a good start. For example, Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson who are starting the game should shoot some birdies and secure the lead as soon as possible. Having a nice start is essential in any
team event. If the Americans fall behind in the start, it will not be very easy to catch up and hence retain the cup. With the Europeans hot-blooded to bring the cup back home, they will get more focused and energetic with every point they earn.  Critiques
say that the comeback the team showed in 1999 at Brookline isn’t likely to repeat itself this year.
The strength that the US team has with them is the distance hitters. Bubba Watson, Jeff Overton and Dustin Johnson should definitely use their skills to scare the Europeans with distance. With the crowd going crazy for the home team, players with such skills
can easily step up to the tee and fly his ball 50 yards past the rivals. A shot like this is bound to bring the cheering down a notch.
When a team has World number 1 and 2 with them, they really don’t need to worry about anything. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson can and definitely should promise some good news to the Americans. Mickelson has always played well in the Ryder Cups and has recently
been really on top of his game. Even though Woods and Ryder Cups don’t really get along, this year it’s the Tiger’s reputation on the line. Having a poor form ever since November last year, it’s really World number one’s chance to show everyone he is still
the best.
With the Ryder Cup being held in Europe this year, the Americans really need to concentrate on the game only. The team should definitely ignore the booing and the cheering the crowd does. Their focus should definitely be on the Ryder Cup Trophy.
Last Ryder Cup, a lot of enthusiasm was brought into the cup by the rookie Anthony Kim. The energy he brought was a crucial ingredient in the recipe for victory. The way he crushed Sergio Garcia in the first singles match is unforgettable.
This year, one of the rookies in spotlight is the tacky Rickie Fowler. Playing for the Ryder Cup for the first time, he really needs to show the world that the youth can make a difference.
It is a fact that no team or no one is perfect. There are definitely some weak points in a person or if two players are competing as a pair, there could be something that they are doing wrong. Even though the cup has started, it’s still not late for the
Americans to be aware of their weaknesses and they should make sure that the weak links don’t cost the team the victory.
It is for sure that the weather will be a pain. With forecasts of heavy rain and highs in upper 50’s and lows in upper 40’s, it will get difficult. Well the Americans really need to bring out their winter attire and do their best no matter how fast the winds
are.
Where the Americans are coming up with strategies, it is obvious that the Europeans have their thinking caps on as well. The competition is fierce and the prize is only for the team that performs best. The wait is only till Sunday to see who takes the cup
home.
