Golf Update: Ryder Cup finale couple to battle again
The last two contenders in the 2010 Ryder Cup were the American Hunter Mahan and the Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell. Being the ones to finish off the grand event, both the players are in special spotlight following the Cup. Mahan and McDowell are set
to duel again in the first round of the PGA Tour season of 2011 on Thursday.
The Hyundai Tournament of Champions revealed their tee times, and according to them, Hunter and Mahan are to tee off together at the Kapalua’s Plantation Course.
Graeme’s birdie on the 16th hole confirmed victory for the European Team last October. Playing at Celtic Manor, both the players tried their best for their respective teams to win what was the longest Ryder Cup in history. Instead of being three
day long, due to weather, 2010 Ryder Cup was extended on to Monday as well.
McDowell won his singles match against Mahan on the next hole and hence provided the European’s with the 14.5 they required to win. Where McDowell was seen as the Ryder Cup hero after scoring the winning putt, Mahan felt extremely guilty. So much was the
guilt and disappointment in the American that he got emotional and couldn’t hold his tears back in the press conference.
Mahan’s fellow teammates did try to make him feel better and covered for him when he couldn’t talk. It is the truth that any victory or loss was due to the whole team effort rather than just one player. Following the Ryder Cup, it was McDowell who stayed
in the headlines one after another
McDowell won the Andalucía Masters and most recently, he defeated the fourteen time major championship winner, Tiger Woods, in his own event. McDowell’s victory in the Chevron World Challenge was legendary since he overcame a four point deficiency in the
final round and defeated Woods in the play-off. Despite Tiger trying his best to win at least one title in the year 2010, he was crushed by G-MAC.
McDowell will head into the Hyundai Tournament with a lot confidence. Seeing how he has had an amazing 2010, Graeme is feeling on top of the world. He has many awards including the player of the year award by both the US and British golf writers.
2010 was a good year in golf, and now all the players and golf fans are excited for the 2011 season to start. The Ryder Cup duo, Mahan and McDowell, will tee off at 12.10 pm on Thursday.
