Golf Update: Stephen Britton prepares TPC Potomac for Senior Players' Championship
The 2010 Constellation Energy Senior Players' Championship will start tomorrow (7th Oct 2010) at TPC Potomac, Avenel Farm and continue till 10th Oct 2010. The event carries a purse of US$ 2.7 million while the winner will get US$ 405,000.
This would be the 5th event and last major of the championship tour. So, PGA Tour has decided to bring it on an environment -friendly field. Stephen Britton, a GCSAA Class A member, was hired to perform the job and he has not only saved the TPC
Potomac from long and hot summers but also prepared it for the event.
"Stephen has been a pleasure to work with," said GCSAA Certified Golf Course Superintendent, Dennis Ingram, who is also PGA Tour's Regional Agronomy Director. "His appreciation for the game of golf and the design concept of newly renovated TPC Potomac has
been welcomed by the club staff and members. “
According to Ingram, Stephen Britton preformed an excellent job even in the peak season of summers when the heat was intolerable. He provided excellent daily conditions for the clubhouse's members and guests. He also prepared the course for the championship
players so that they find ease in performing at TPC Potomac.
Britton is also the Director of Golf Course Operations at TPC Potomac. The North Melbourne University graduate in turf grass management said, "Usually around the beginning of July, we go into a more defensive approach for the summers. With a more conservative
approach to our mowing, spraying and watering, we pretty much came out of the summer unscathed. The fall weather has been kind to us and we're in great shape."
Britton came from Piedmont Club in Haymarket where he served as a Superintendent for three years. Before that, he worked as an Assistant Superintendent at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club for four years. He also served as a greens-keeper at Royal Melbourne Golf
Club for seven years before moving to Virginia.
The course looks ready to host the 2010 Constellation Energy Senior Players' Championship. Britton added, "The leaves are starting to turn and after some showers advance weekend, it looks like a cool, sunny weather is in the forecast for the tournament week.....the
golf course is peaking for this event."
It seems that TPC isn't that same old course that had earlier hosted Kemper Open from 1987-2006. It now looks completely different with additional length added to the greens. It stretches to 7,124 yards with a new par-70 layout of wooden terrain and bunkers,
creeks as well as streams.
The PGA Tour management has already announced the list of players expected to play at TPC Potomac tomorrow and the most interesting part of it is that the 2010 Ryder Cup striker, Corey Pavin will also tee off here.
The American captain recently lost the cup to the Europeans after a tough battle but despite the loss, he still seems ready to face yet another challenge. Some 900 spectators have bought the tickets to see this show.
