Golf Update: The Canadian Open 2010 (22nd-25th July)
This week’s golf happenings include the tournament taking place in Canada. On the occasion of the 101th RBC Canadian cup this year all the golfers will meet up on the St. George’s Golf and Country Club compete for the title. This Club has previously been part of the tournament four times and the last time being in 1968. The tournament doesn’t have many top players but has two of the top ten players taking part in the tournament this time.
Paul Casey, the eighth ranked player in the world along with Luke Donald, who is ranked ninth are amongst the favourites to grab the title this year. However, as we saw in the last tournament, The Open Championship that tournaments are never won on paper, therefore it remains it to be seen who wins the title this time in Canada. The tournament also has some other high profile players like Retief Goosen, who managed to finish 2nd last year and who is ranked 16th in the world rankings. The 19th ranked player in the world, Sean O’Neal will also be looking forward to put up a challenge for the title.
The Canadians on the other hand, would love their local two players to win and will be backing and cheering the two Canadian players Mike Weir and Stephen Ames.
The previous players who managed to win the Canadian Open are quite impressive as well. The crowned champions of the Canadian Open include the likes of Nick Price, the great Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh.
The course that will be having bent grass greens rolling about 11 and about 4 tough would challenge the players to some extent. The well sloped greens will be keeping the speeds in the range of about 11. The hole No.3 that is the most sloped in the course is one of the obstacles in way for golfers to move ahead. When the superintendent of the course was asked about the condition of the course, he answered that he didn’t want to be held responsible for any circus like golf. He said that for him, golf held a great deal of importance and he did all he could and with a doubt if his hard work pays off, the tournament is going to be a success. For the same reason, he had worked particularly on hole No. 3 and said that the hole was in good condition with the greens rolling good. He also added that the players for sure will enjoy and be happy with it.
The St. George Gold and Country Club is about 7000 yards, compared to the modern golf courses this being relatively short and one which could help the short hitters. This makes the tournament all the more exciting to watch, as there would be upcoming golfers who would surely be challenging for the title. The person who would be crowned the champion would therefore have to earn this title by facing tough competition.
Last year the Canadian Open took place in the Abbey Golf and Country Club. The tournament saw Nathan Green or The Australian Green who belonging to Toronto along with the support of the Canadian, managed to clinch the title. He was able to outplay Retief Goosen in two hole playoff. This year he will come in this tournament with more confidence and hunger to defend his title and at the end being able to maintain it.
The most popular player in the tournament thus far considering the fact that the tournament is taking place in Canada is Mike Weir. In a press conference on Tuesday when he was questioned about how much pressure there was as to a Canadian being a winner this year at the Canadian Open. Mike answered saying that the level of expectancy and the pressure to win is great but bearing in mind these things, it makes the tournament all the more exciting and one which any Canadian would love to take part and obviously win.
Mike Weir was also asked about the condition of the field to which he replied that the field looks in great condition and the management did a great job. He also added that this year there are even better players taking part and the important part of this is due to the field and the hard work of the management. The Canadian open starts on the 22nd of July promising an exciting tournament and gearing us up for the upcoming and most awaited tournament that is the Ryder cup.
