Golf Update: The FedEx Cup isn’t a bad aperitif to the Ryder Cup 2010
There are some spells that can’t be broken and some obsessions that are hard to let go. In the world of Golf, the current trend is the Ryder Cup mania. However, Ryder Cup is still two weeks away and before we excitedly indulge ourselves in the Ryder Cup,
there is still one event that needs a wrap up. After all, the FedEx Bounty isn’t something small.
The FedEx Cup started almost nine months before known to be the ‘IT’ event in Hawaii. Currently this event has reached its older days, has entered in the last and fourth play-off of a US PGA Tour season, and is the world’s second richest event. The event
will be held in Atlanta, East Lake and stands after the European Tour’s season ender Dubai in the list of richest tournaments.
The amount of players has been decreasing with the event moving further in its schedule. The FedEx Cup started at the Barclays Cup containing 125 players all of top ranking. At the second event, the number 25 left the hundred leaving only 100 players, whereas
the third event only contained 75. Now on the last scheduled event of the FedEx Cup, only 30 players will be appearing.
One thing has been very interesting in this event. According to the critics, literally all the players have positioned themselves with their points for the prize. Mathematically and rather cynically speaking, every golfer on the Atlanta greens has a chance
of winning the $ 10 million bonus for the Cup.
For the winner in Georgia, there is another dollar amount $ 1,350,000 waiting just after the last hole. The effects in the money list after this event will rather be huge with a total of $ 11.35 Million in the hands of the winner. This is obviously for the
one who wins at the grand weekend and marks the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup with his name.
For those players who are currently on the top five, they contain more chance of winning the tournament than those in the periphery. Those who are hovering near the top 5 also have a chance of winning. Of course, last year’s Phil Mickelson standing cannot
be forgotten at any cost. His placement at the sixth position as well as the win at Tour Championship wasn’t much in hands to see catch Tiger Woods. Mickelson is standing at number 10 currently and is one shot advantage to claim his title back.
The top five contains the American golfers Matt Kuchar, Dustin Johnson, Steve Stricker and Charley Hoffman. In the America top five, one European, Paul Casey, is also holding up well.
Kuchar, Stricker and Johnson from the top five at the Atlanta Open will also be appearing at the Ryder Cup. However, Paul Casey and Hoffman being the controversial ‘barred’ individuals, will not, since they were overlooked by the captain Colin Montgomerie
and Corey Pavin for the captain’s picks.
Luke Donald is one of the European golfers that may be able to take a shot for glory. With 12, 00 points in hand, the thirty two year old is standing on the seventh place with Kuchar at the front. Considering Donald chances, all he needs from DJ is to finish
a bit lower than second place.
Now with the event due on the 23rd of September till the 26th, all fans are much eager to see the highly dramatic FedEx Finale weekend. Whether we like it or hate it, the FedEx Cup isn’t a bad aperitif to the Ryder Cup 2010.
