Golf Update: The Gary Koch Intercollegiate event at the Old Memorial Golf Club in Tampa
The Gary Koch Intercollegiate was a two day event played on the 2nd and 3rd of October. The tournament was played at the Old Memorial Golf Club in Tampa. The event held this Saturday was co-hosted by the University Of Kentucky (UK)
as its second tournament of the spell. This was a 54-hole event scheduled to host 36 holes in its first round and then 18 holes in R2 at Sunday.
The event welcomed a total of 11 other schools along with the Co-host. Auburn, College of Charleston and Florida State which stood at number 20, 47 and 41 appeared in the field. Other than these schools, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern, Middle Tennessee
State, UNC- Greensboro, south Florida, Virginia, North Carolina and the number 50 North Florida also competed in the event.
Team Kentucky had a pretty young line-up for the tournament with one senior, three sophomores, one freshman and one junior. The golfers in the brigade were Brian Belden, Chase Parker, Seth Blann, Joseph Barr, Cody Martin and Chase Carpenter.
Out of these players, Bland, Martin and Barr appeared for the first time at the Gary Koch Intercollegiate considering their collegiate years. The three golfers have however played at the UK’s Wolf Run Collegiate beforehand.
At the final round of the event, Brian Belden from team Kentucky posted a marvellous 73 with a 1 over par. The native of Emmaus score placed him at the top 15 making it his first finish of this nature.
Belden started his event with scoring a 70. The 2 under at the beginning of the round was followed by a 73 successively in the next two. In the total event, Belden collected 12 birdies and hence ended his game with an even-par 216.
Belden was followed by Chase Parker who finished the tournament in a tie for the 31st position. He played a 222 with 6 over par. The leader board witnessed Parker’s play of 78 in the opening round and a 73 in the second round with 1 over. His
last round was a 71 and jumped ten places at the leader boards.
The head coach Brian Craig had seemed very excited before the commencement of event. He said that the golf Club Old Memorial is one beautiful course and has a great field to play on. The coach stated that they are extremely excited for the co-hosted event.
Other than the native of Augusta, the UK rotation was wrapped up by three players, Joseph Barr, Seth Blann and Cody Martin. The 44th place was tied with Blann standing with an 11 over par 227. Barr on the other hand was tied 57th at
an 18 over par 234. Cody Martin ended at the 62nd place due to his 237, 21 over par play. His best round had Martin carding a 76 with a 4 up.
The 65th place was held by Chase Carpenter. The junior finished in a tie with his 246 game being a 30 up.
Apart from the team, the individual win went to Ben Kohles. The man from Virginia carded a 207 with a 9 under par. The person trailing Kohles was Brooks Koepka. The golfer from the state of California was one shot behind Kohles and ended with an 8 under.
In 2005, the UK team won an individual championship at the tournament. The individual was Matt Kohn, who carded a 207 at the 54-hole game ending it with a 9 under. The University of Kentucky is now focusing on the Philadelphia Big Five invitational due to
be held on the 9th and tenth of October.
