Golf Update: The West Virginia High School Tournament displays high scores in its all-three classes.
The West Virginia High School Tournament held its first round of the golf today. The event was held at the Robert Trent Jones Course in Oglebay and displayed some fairly high scores. The event catered three classes, Class AAA, Class AA and Class A which
will end on the 8th of October.
The AAA leader board is currently tied with three teams for the first place. Team Wheeling Park, Fairmont Senior and Bridgeport are all striving to hold the first place with a 246. Two strokes behind is the team Parkersburg and then Greenbrier East stands
five shots back.
From the team’s perspective, a 20 shot deficit is nothing of a big matter and can be taken over easily. Robert C. Byrd is standing with a difference of 20 strokes from the leaders and has two more rounds to grab the lead. The team number eight with a 20-shot
difference is still avidly charging for the win.
The Bridgeport coach Fred Wilhelm believes that the host team Wheeling holds an advantage in the current course. He says that they have been playing with team Wheeling all year and says that he didn’t expect much from his team at round one. He stressed that
there are still two more rounds and the team is well underway for the win.
From the class AA, Team Bridgeport was led by Ritche County which scored a 251. Poca is following the former team with a difference of 4 strokes. This team was led by the golfer George Hamrick who carded a 77. Team Chapmanville is standing 5 strokes back
whose leader, Zack Gresham holds a 78.
From class A, Blue Dons of Gobleck displayed some good knowledge of the course and currently holds the lead over the Parkersburg Catholic. The team holds a 17 stroke lead over the 268 carded team.
Pat McCune from the Class A was highly disturbed after carding an 85 at the golf course. The golfer however later realized that his score has been the third-best in its class. He says that the trick is to keep on playing even if the game turns bad. The second
place in Class A is held by David Miller. The golfer from the Charleston Catholic carded an 84.
The West Virginia High School tournament faced lofty scores due to two reasons. One, the RTJ course itself is lethal in nature and two is the weather’s fatal attitude for the R1 golfers.
The temperature on the course was 55 degree with the threat of rain lurking just above their heads. The par 71 course only allowed nine scores to enter the 70s range.
The only person who was able to break the 75 barrier was Andrew Gobleck. The golfer from Weirton Madonna carded a total of 74 with a 3 over par. After carding a score like this, Gobleck was in shock. The WM golfer said that he started his game with bogey
after bogey but letter found its rhythm. After an unsatisfactory start, Gobleck stopped lipping the putts out and says that he didn’t do anything bad.
Among the high scorers, Thadd Obecny was also seen struggling. Obecny is known to be one of the Wheeling Park Freshman sensations and managed to card a mere 82. The sizzling freshman was playing on his home field and even then scored 10 shots above his average
score. Obecny played the Jones Course two weeks back and carded a marvellous 68 despite the rainy conditions. The current tournament witnessed one of the worst scores of this season by the freshman.
The leader board shows Thadd Obecny tied for the 12th position in the Class AAA. He is trailing Russell James with a 6 stroke deficit. James has carded a total of 76.
Obecny’s teammate, Eli Lambie also failed to display a satisfactory play with his 84. He also played one of the highest scores in his season. The lowest score from the Wheeling Park was an 80 from Jacob Carpenter.
