Golf Update: Three little Indians at 2010 Asia Pacific Open
The third round of 2010 Asia Pacific Open finally wrapped up on Sunday with one Indian slipping off while the other rising.
SSP Chowrasia was the only player to break par with a score of three-under 68 in the final round. He settled at the 30th spot with Tony Carolan, Marcus Fraser, Tetsuya Haraguchi and Kim Hyung-Tae.
Chowrasia ended his three day session with a total of two-over and with the help of four birdies against one bogey. As for the other Indians, Anirban Lahiri got tied at the 55th after settling for a two-over 73. He carded three bogeys and one birdie in the
front nine. Chowrasia submerged from the bottom of the leader board and took the 30th spot in the presence of torrent wind and heavy rain.
Earlier, owing to the bad weather conditions, the Open’s opening round was cancelled while 72 holes also reduced to 54. Even then, there wasn’t much difference in the overall results. However, at the same time there were some incredible moments as well.
For instance, Gaganjeet Bhullar delivered a bogey-less round while Ryo Ishikawa made a fabulous hole-in-one at the 6th hole with the help of 7- iron. The strategy behind this amazing shot seemed to be the alignment of the shot with the direction
of the wind.
As for Bhullar, after coming up with a spot-less opening, he delivered his worst round of the week with a score of seven-over 78. Owing to a disastrous closing, he settled with an aggregate of eight-over 221. This led him to 59th place on the
leader board. This Punjabi professional golfer dropped seven shots in 18 holes, carding five bogeys and one double bogey.
Golf experts believe that Bhullar is a talented player with an excellent putting ability but the only aspect of his game which requires attention is long hits. Although, his driving is also quite satisfactory but still he needs to work on his hip rotation
so that he can improve his swings and simultaneously his long game.
So much for the torn off Indians, now let’s move to the winners. The Aussie, Brendon Jones smashed a fabulous score of 66 in the final round to clinch the title by a stroke. He posted a total of five-under 207 at the Rokko Kokusai Golf Club's East course.
This is his ninth career title in Japan. He was followed by the overnight leader, Ryuchi Oda, who posted a 70 to settle for the second spot.
The third on the leader board was the defending champion, Daisuke Maruyama. He shot a 69 and therefore fell in a tie with Kim Kyung-tae and Sushi Ishigaki. Apart from him, the Asian Tour Order of Merit leader, Noh Seung-yul took the eighth spot with a 71.
Japans’ poster boy made it to the 13th by scoring a 73 in the $ 1.7 million event jointly sanctioned by the Asian Tour and Japan Golf Tour.
This is it for the tournament which started with bad weather conditions and ended also with the same. The Aussie surged to a victory after a gap of two years and owning to that also took a US$ 356,000 worth of winner prize home. As for the three Indians,
all performed reasonably well at different points of the tournament. But, not much can be blamed onto the players as the overall scores of the tournament were disastrous. Golf is an outdoor game thereby it is subject to weather conditions which ultimately
decide the fate of any of its events.
