Golf Update: Tiger Woods threats Lee Westwood, current world number one
Lee Westwood is the new number one in the world of golf, while Tiger Woods has dropped to number two after topping the charts for a remarkable 281 week stretch. Westwood is the first European to become number one in the world of golf after Nick Faldo from
the year 1994 and is now facing a WGC-HSBC Champions threat from Tiger Woods.
According to latest reports, Tiger Woods has full plans on winning back his top spot after this week’s WGC-HSBC Champions event due to be held in China. The event will be held from the 4th of November to the 7th of this month at the Sheshan International
Golf Club.
Lately, the world number one position had been a tight tussle between Lee Westwood, Tiger Woods and Martin Kaymer considering their points average and is now again the spot of commotion considering the Thursdays match. Woods has stated that he would win
back his place on the 4th; this will be the American’s first jaunt after the October's Ryder Cup.
Other than Woods, if Martin Kaymer and Phil Mickelson give a good kick to their point average, then they have a fair chance of claiming the zenith. Kaymer is currently standing at number three on the world ranking while Mickelson is the defending champion
in Shanghai this weekend.
According to Woods, every event he plays is for grabbing a win. He said that when one is striving for being number one in anything, the trick is to only be number one at everything. He said he’s charging the WGC-HSBC Champions event for the win since he
hasn’t been able to collect some lately.
While talking to the reporters, the thirty four year old stated that the WGC-HSBC Champions is worthy of having the highest impact in Asia. He said that this tournament deserves being the number one affecter and is a crowning jewel.
Woods still has to play 3 more events this year and if he performs up to the mark, he may have a good 2011 start. The American golfer had been the victim of injuries and marital problems lately due to which he hasn’t been able to win a single tournament
this year.
Mickelson is also appearing at the $7 million event and believes that any player can grab the win this year. Mickelson is the winner of the 2007 event in Shanghai and will be playing the 78 man field this year full form.
The forty year old golfer considers the HSBC Champions to hold strength to its core and finds it rather unique. He referred strength as every player on the field that holds talent and experience to win.
“It’s a 78 man field of champions," Mickelson said.
The American golfer has had several chances in the past to overthrow Woods from being the number one but faltered somehow. He included his third victory after winning the Masters title in the month of April and is paired with Westwood and Y.E. Yang in the
first two rounds of the event. Yang is the 2006 champion of this event, another champion.
Other than Mickelson, Kaymer and Yang, Woods will also have to battle Graeme McDowell and Ernie Els. McDowell is the former U.S. Open champion, while Ernie Els is a former number one.
Tiger Woods grabbed sixth place last year at this tournament and has plans on playing the skins tournament in Bangkok. The skins event is a commemoration of the 84th birthday of the King of Thailand and is the birthplace of Woods mother.
Woods, the 14 time major winner, will next run off to secure his Australian Masters title. This event will be held from November 11th to the 14th in Melbourne. After Melbourne, the thirty four will be playing Chevron World Challenge in California as a host
in the month of December.
