Golf Update: Welsh teen Amy Boulden in British Open
In Ricoh Ladies Open, the rising start Amy Boulden may become the British youngest player to tee-off, after she successfully qualified against the top golf professionals.
Amy Boulden, a golfer of North Wales and the younger daughter of North Wales Golf Club professional Simon Boulden, is seen as a star of future golf by qualifying at Royal Birkdale, one of the sports major events near Liverpool. However, she may also experience the taste of the future by competing with the world’s top golf players.
Amy Boulden and Becky Brewerton, the Solheium Cup star, are the only two players in the event that belong to North Wales’s coast and both will compete with the world’s best golfers in the upcoming event.
Amy Boulden, Llandudno-Maesdu player, the current runaway leader of the Ping Ladies Order of Merit, is one of the amateurs to qualify for the Open. The Welsh Open Amateur champions have won the event in Southerdown, with Julie Yang, the 15 years old, South Korean.
Wales international, Amy Boulden, at the age of 16 is all set to compete with the professional golfers like, Laura Davies, Paula Creamer, Christie Kerr, Suzann Pettersen and Jiyai Shin.
Nigel Edwards, director of Golf Union of Wales director of player development and coaching said “This is a major step forward for Amy in every sense of the word,” “It is a considerable achievement for her to get through final qualifying, there are a lot of very good and experienced professionals who did not manage that.”
Edwards further said that the experience she will gain this week is going to be very precious, getting to play in one of the biggest events in women’s golf and also getting to see the world’s best players at first hand.
“Amy has been a key part of the Welsh development system for a few years now and a vital member of the Wales ladies team who won the Home Internationals for the last two years.”
Later this summer at Whitchurch golf club in Cardiff, she was reported on saying that Amy will also be able to take all her new experiences back to the team, when they try to make it a hat-trick of Home International victories.
Boulden came through to the final qualifying at Southport Golf Club. Her score of 73 was level with Yang in joint seventh, was enough to claim one of the 17 remaining spots with New Zealander Lynette Brooky claiming top spot with a 67.
She goes into Birkdale on the back of an impressive tied eighth finish at the European Ladies Individual Championship in the Czech Republic.
She carded rounds of 71, 73, 71 and 72 to finish on one under par.
Double Solheim Cup cap Brewerton was involved in a high-profile three-ball for the opening two rounds heading out with world No 1 Shin and Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist.
Jeremy Bennett Golf Union of Wales women’s coach says Amy has what it takes to reach the top. Expectations are very high from her “Everyone involved in Welsh golf will wish her all the best in an exciting week.” hopefully she will play her best and will not let her fans down.
