Golf Update: Westy injures himself again at Kingsbarns
Wow Tiger Woods is surely lucky! Rumour has it that Lee Westwood will be taking a withdrawal from the Alfred Dunhill Links championship because of recurring pain in the injured calf. Earlier, the world number 2 vowed to overthrow
Tiger Woods from the top of the world golf ranking.
Lee Westwood was two-under-par 70 after the first round when he decided that it was time to consult his physical trainer Steve McGregor. The 37-year-old rang him up and told him about the sudden pain that started to occur after
he tried to come down from the 7th tee.
The winner of the Ryder Cup was absolutely fine in the four day session of the biannual event and it was him who bought victory in the hands of Europe. Westwood had suffered from a calf injury in August; therefore, he was absent
from competitive golf for two months. However, last three days before the Monday, Westwood was physically fit and it was hard to point that the player had gone through some injury.
Once again the pain started to disturb the player, while he was coming off the 7th tee which was a downhill slope. Lee Westwood once again incurred a calf injury in Kingsbarns: the venue for $5million purse event. Kingsbarns is
not the only course where the players are supposed to tee. In fact, there are two more courses; Old Course and Carnoustie Golf Club. The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship arrives every year at the three courses of Scotland in October and this is what sets
it apart from the rest of the tournament. All three courses are a true representation of the link style course with longer pars.
Speaking to the press Lee Westwood said, "I felt it coming off the seventh tee, It was a really steep down slope and it's really aching now like I'm doing too much too soon. Playing two weeks in a row was probably too much in hindsight.
I should have gone back to rehab. I'm going to go and get treatment and see how it is, but I don't want to get back to where it was. It improved a lot, but it's still not right. I can't load my right side. I just want to get off it as quickly as possible.”
Westwood has been carrying his ice and compression machine on the tour and he even had it when he was in Celtic Manor for the Ryder Cup. However, then, he did not find the need to use it but after the first round of the current
event sudden need arose as the pain was unbearable for the Ryder Cup star.
He added, "I was playing great before the injury and I've not had a chance to practise. That's frustrating in itself. I'm just not able to work hard. I was advised not to flog myself last week and although I didn't have to play
five games it was four on a hilly, heavy course.”
According to the injured player, his trainer Steve told him that the problem will vanish away after six months but for that proper rest was required. Lee Westwood made an appearance right after the Ryder Cup which he should not
have. In fact, he should have gone to a rehab.
Lee Westwood wanted to dethrone Tiger Woods. Predictions were, if Westwood finishes in the first two spots of the leaderboard, then he will be the able to end the five-year reign of Tiger Woods as the world number one. Now, the
chances seem vague as Lee Westwood might not be playing in the second round of the tournament.
Westy has one more tournament left and that is the Portugal Masters which is due in the next month. Hopefully even if he withdraws from the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, he will still have one more chance to be the next world
number one.
