Golf Update: Yani wins the 35th Ricoh Women's British Open
The 35th Ricoh Women's British open which started on the29th July has finally ended on Sunday 1st August 2010 at Royal Birkdale. The winner of the tournament is the 21-year-old Yani Tseng.
Yani Tseng has won her third major title, which is also her second victory this season. Second to her is an Australian Katherine Hull with 10 under.
This 21-year-old Taiwanese is on cloud nine after being dubbed the Tiger Woods of Taiwan. What bigger compliment can a young player get after this?
Yani Tseng started her last and final round with a 12-under-par, a four stroke lead over her competitor Katherine Hull. However, she was not confident over her victory because of her bitter past experiences. Although, she held a dominant position, over the Australian but it was not enough for the solid victory. In past, Yani entered the final round with the same lead over Katherine Hull at the Canadian Open 2008, unfortunately, she lost!
Likely, Yani Tseng did not want to repeat history, although a building up pressure was seen in her performance throughout the final day. This anxiety was noticed by her caddie Jason as well.
According to the analysts, this pressure was the reason behind her terrible performance, which resulted in 73 in round 4 on the scorecard. She was missing her shots and her putting needed accuracy.
On the other hand, Katherine Hull was calm and confident and she was not showing any of these symptoms. In fact, she birdied the 2nd and the 3rd hole which resulted into more pressure on Yani Tseng to which she responded with a bogey of the3rd hole.
However, the scenario turned upside down immediately, when the characters of both of the players switched and Yani Tseng birdied the 4th hole of par 3, while Katherine Hull shot a bogey. Yani Tseng could not carry her calm and composed attitude and shot a miscalculated three put on the 10th green, to which Katherine Hull replied with a birdie on the 11th and the 13th hole. This scenario carried on till the end of the game. Both the contenders cleared the last three holes with a par which ideally should have been birdied.
Moving forward, the day finally ended with no par breakers at all, in fact there was a serious criticism on the performance of these two players. According to the experts, if it would not be the first 3 rounds neither Yani Tseng nor Katherine Hull would have made their way to the top of the leader board.
According to Yani Tseng, she was very happy that she was a part of the big event and that was the reason she was not thinking much about the results. Well, the spectators and the media said something quite reverse of this statement!
Other than the champion and the runners up, there were other players too, who played quite satisfactory. Na Yeon Choi, shot 68 whereas In-Kyung Kim shot 71.these both ladies tied up for the 3rd position and the purse amount of $159,825. Americas all time favourite Cristie Kerr, Amy Yang and Hee-Kyung Seo shot 70 and tied up for the 5th place.
The new sensation that arose from the tournament was Sweden's Caroline Hedwall. She was the amateur who scored the lowest throughout the week. This 17-year-old will be heading to the qualifying school for the training.
On the whole, the 35th Ricoh Women's British open has concluded with Yani Tseng, as the winner followed by Katherine Hull. According to the experts, the tournament was a challenge in itself; the players performed quite satisfactory keeping in view the challenging greens of the course; Yani Tseng’s putting needed consistency and accuracy, although her shots were excellent.
The Royal Birkdale will be bidding good bye to the ladies, who performed at the venue. The tournament was exciting till the end with lots of healthy competition; however, the final round was not as superb as expected.
