Golf Update: Matt McQuillan eyeing the Sony Open
Matt McQuillan is eyeing his debut PGA Tour event at season’s opener, Sony Open in Hawaii next week. However, there is a slight problem in this bid. McQuillan has not received confirmation regarding the contention yet.
The 29-year-old finished in a tie at 16th spot in December and managed his way out of the Qualifying school with utmost grace. The player had been facing financial issues since two years, which is why he was absent from competitive golf scenario.
Now, the situation is different. The player is 31st on the preference list, which means that his stakes are high for getting into the tournament. Speaking to the press regarding the issue, McQuillan said,
"It was financial issues. I just ran out of money and I felt a little tired of asking people for it. Working in Kingston over those two years made me realize how good I had it playing golf for a living and I was getting keen about getting out there again
and was fortunate enough to find some support from home."
After finishing strong in the last stage of Q-school, McQuillan received loads of applause on Twitter. He revealed, “I've had just great support and it was definitely magnified after Q-school. Everybody had their well wishes and I appreciate all of
them. It's great to have lots of followers and people's support and I just hope I can perform well."
Most of the support in his case came from the members of Garrison Golf and Curling Club, where McQuillan is a regular visitor. These visits were not normal practice sessions. The player is eyeing the Bob Hope Classic after the Sony Open, which will feature
a strong field.
The player lacks form as he has been out of golf since two years, but despite that, he finished strong in the Q- School. After carding 11-under-par in the first stage, McQuillan notched pace and gave a superb performance by the end. A change in swings was
also witnessed in golfers’ game, but apart from that, a change in attitude was also recorded.
Matt McQuillan will be teeing off next week at Sony Open, provided he gets the confirmation prior to the event.
