When refering to golf what is a handicap???

take the average of your top ten scores and shave off twenty percent. if your average score is 10 over then your handicap will be an 8

in a sense its an average. at the end of all my rounds i enter my score and the number of strokes over par that i am is my handicap, at least for that specific round. my home course is a par 72. i typically shoot in the mid 70 so if for example i go -73, 78, 75, 76 in 4 rounds, my handicap would be about 3-4. 3.5 to be exact. handicap for multiple rounds would be an average of number of strokes yur over par/round

A golf handicap is calculated based on previous scores. It is designed to take the average of your best scores and give you a number that you can adjust your score in a tournament or other play that will put you at a level similar to a scratch golfer.

handicap is not your average score, it is your potential score, if you shoot 80 all the time on a par 72, you will likely be a 6-7 handicap

"Potential ability is defined by the term Handicap Index and is measured through a calculation using the player's best scores. These best scores are determined by calculating the Handicap Differential for each score. The Handicap Index is calculated by taking 96 percent of the average of the best Handicap Differential(s), and applying Section 10-3 for players with two or more eligible tournament scores."
