  1. You cant compare the popularity of tennis to golf.  Golf is far and away more popular than tennis and therefore the purses are far greater.

  2. TIGER HAS BROUGHT MORE VIEWERS TO GOLF THAN ANYONE, EVEN JACK!!!

  3. There in way more money generated from golf at any level than tennis. Think about it: The average golfer spends over $1,000 just on clubs. Add a couple hundred a year on balls, gloves, and tees, a thousand dollars or so on green fees, and we're talking big bucks. An avid tennis player uses a $200 (or less) tennis racket, and $100 or so in balls per year. Plus golfers outnumber tennis players 5 to 1.

What that adds up to is more, richer companies fighting for the right to outfit the average golf fan. They will spend many more millions of dollars on sponsoring tournaments than anyone involved in tennis.

And I agree with the other guy, there are way more people at golf tournaments than tennis tournaments. I used to go to the Memorial every year, and it sells out every single year. Do you know how many people it takes to sell out a venue or that  size? A lot!

  4. You are absolutely wrong in saying that there are no spectators during golf tournaments. There are tens of thousands of paying spectators...way more than tennis matches. Also, there are corporate sponsors that pay big money to be associated with golf tournaments. Part of this corporate sponsorship goes towards the prize pool for the golfers. TV networks also pay a lot of money for the rights to broadcast events.
