Golf ball question. with full details this time. sorry?

Me and a friend were yesterday chatting and wondered what the contents of the soft black rubber ball you find at the centre of the wound type of golf ball.

It's some kind of oil.  I used to cut them open as a kid with a hacksaw.  I always hated those particular kinds because they were messy.

I understand that Titleist liquid centers on their wound balls consist of corn syrup and salt water, which makes it non-toxic.
