  1. Get lessons, practice, practice, practice, big drives aren't necessarily the best shots, practice, practice, keep your clubs clean, practice, practice - oh and did I mention practice... :)

  2. Here are a few tips from a fellow beginner:

    1. Hold the club in your fingers, not in your palm.

    2. Become tunnel visioned when you're driving. Really focus on where you need to hit the ball, don't obsess about the trees on the right or whatever.

    3. Start with a shorter club, about 43 inches. You'll have more accuracy (maybe less distance).

    4. Practise whenever you can. It's the only way you're gonna get better.

If you plan on playing this game for a while, pick up a copy of the Golf Digest's Breaking 100, 90, 80. It's an absolute gem!

  3. Well there are actually three types of grips.  There is the baseball grip, the interlocking grip (Tiger uses this) and the overlaping grip that most golfers use.  They all work.  The best thing that you can do is learn the fundamentals, something I wish I had concentrated on 50 years ago when I was learning the game.  There is a lot of free help on the web.  Check it out.  Along with the physical fundamentals comes the mental fundamentals.  It is just as important and maybe more important than the physical fundamentals.  Focus and concentration are big keys.  Good Luck! I wish someone told me this a long time back.

  4. TAKE LESSONS!!!!!!

Don't make my mistake.  I'm a self-taught golfer and I regret not getting lessons when I first started playing.  I'm getting ready to take some lessons this spring to help me get rid of the bad habits I've developed since I was self-taught.

  5. Two Tips

    1) Run, do not walk to an instructor. Get started on the right foot and you will not then spend a lifetime unlearning bad habits.

    2) Don't take tips from people on the internet. They haven't seen your swing and they don't know where you're at.

  6. You can get tips from all sorts of places. Instructors are the best place to start, however they are also the most expensive. You will probably have to pay for any good advice. That doesn't mean that you have to pay big bucks for tips.

Here is a good place to start for free tips for beginners.

  7. Practice as often as you can.  Get lessons if at all possible.  They can be a little pricey.  I've found a little trial and error and a prescription to Golf Magazine has done wonders for me.  To become a better golfer, you have to have an understanding of how to play the game.  You have to know your game and commit to the shot before you play it.  You develop your game through practice at the range, not on the golf course.

  8. yep go see a pga pro instructor, you won't regret it.

  9. Take a lesson from a certified golf professional.

Don't compare your game to the professionals.  They are pros for a reason.

There are many nuances to the golf swing.  Don't try to implement too many changes at one time.  Master one change before you move on to another.

  10. For sure take a lesson, dont learn too many things at the same time.... 1 thing in a lesson... practice it until you get used to it before take next lessons.

Read golf magazine and watch video/tv about golf, but remember... dont try to learn too many things in same time... step by step.

There are no way to give tips about your swing over here.  1 tips, dont think too much about your swing, make it simple and just hit the ball..

  11. get really good guideline early ... that way you are not learning bad habits that have to be unlearnt later.

You will have strengths and weaknesses. Play to your strength.

    3 good tips.

    - Keep your eye on the ball. If you look up too early, you will move your shoulder and slice or hook the ball

    - draw a line behind the ball that will aim at your target. Many get the club to join the line 2 inches from the ball ... but follow the line with the club head for 7 inches, and you leave less room for error. - Try it

    - Long putts: aim to get the ball within 4 feet of the hole to prepare for 2nd putt. To do that, pick a spot 3 to 6 feet from the ball that lines up to the hole. Don't aim for the hole 20 feet away, but that closer spot with the power to take the ball 16 - 24 feet

  12. Interlocking grip ?  Some do and Some don't.

Go to your local PGA teaching pro and get a few lessons.

Also, make sure they have video equip.  I think it is very helpful to see yourself swing a club and have is critiqued by the pro.

Most of all !   RELAX and HAVE A BLAST !

Golf should be a relaxing sport, hence is why so many old farts play !

And whatever you do...don't over analyze your swing.  It has to be a very natural movement or you won't be able to reproduce it over and over again !

  13. get yourself a session of lesson from a golf pro. take one lesson and work on what he/she show you for two weeks before you next lesson.

  14. If you are just starting out, I don't recommend running out to a instructor especially since they are not cheap. The reason being is you could pay for 5 or 6 classes and decide you hate golf. So, clubs=100-500 bucks, 5 or 6 classes - 250-300 dollars for a grand total of 350-800 dollars. Go to the range with your clubs. Get a big bucket of balls and get to swinging. Follow the advice of some of the people on your board. Again, I wouldn't really get professional help until you know for a fact that you want to play golf.

  15. 90% of your golf game comes from your setup before you hit the ball.  take few classes  and practice at least a couple times a week.

Stance, grip, coil, posture, and distance to the ball are all more important than strength.

  16. Unless you have hundreds of dollars to spend on private lessons the best tip I can give you it to buy Hogan's book, "Five Lessons, the Modern Fundamentals".  It will give you a solid foundation of the fundamentals of the game for about $12.00.
