Golf club reputable brands?

Question

I am looking to take up golf, and I am currently searching for a set of clubs. Does anyone have any recommendations for brands to lean towards, but more importantly, stay away from? I keep coming across Dunlop golf club sets - I have heard the name, but are they quality that will last as I begin my adventures in golfing?

I would probably stay away from the Dunlop clubs because they do not specialize in golf. I would recommend Titleist, Ping, Callaway, Taylormade, and Cleveland clubs. They seem to make the best quality of clubs.

hi, a lot depends on your age as to what to look for,i take it you are adult average hight ,i think you should look for a set of calaways, you can pick these up quite reasonable,

look on ebay see what is about or better still go to your local golf course they will have some second hand sets to start you with,try them on the practise area before you buy good luck,

If I were you I'd get hold of a 2nd hand set to start with.  You should be able to pick a set up for a very reasonable price in some golf shops (American Golf Discount is one in the UK).  

To be perfectly honest, if you are just starting the game, the brand really doesn't matter.  In 3 months, when you've decided if you want to continue or not, that's when you might look at buying an off the shelf set.  Which one you buy is really up to you, but the most popular are TaylorMade, Ping, Titleist, Cobra, Mizuno, Nike, Callaway, Cleveland).

If you are just starting to play golf there is no need to go out and purchase an expensive set of clubs. The main thing is make sure you purchase cavity back irons and not blades because they have a larger sweet spot on the club. Also I would recommend getting the clubs sized for your height and swing. I would do this as opposed to buying a more expensive set in the box. My first clubs were knock-offs of Pings and got them bent and sized for my height. Once you have decided you like the game and play often then I would purchase a more expensive set. Until then I wouldn't invest alot into it because you might not play as much as you had hoped to.

Great sounds like me when I first took up golf 10 yrs ago.

Here's my advice:

Try get a set of golf clubs free from your buddies (USED ONE - any type will do because you have not decided if you like the game or not)

Reason - before you start, you need to be trained by a professional golf teacher otherwise forget about playing GOLF that will cost you some money to pay for lessons ( I took about six month worth of golf lesson from my pro each lasting once a week 1 hr lesson)

Reasons: Golf is a LOVE / HATE affair, either you love it and hate it, you will still love it / hate it

Reasons: If you learn golf the proper way, you will treasure every step and every bit of the way to happy golfing and not getting injured.

Reasons: There will be positive remarks suchs wow, where did you learn to Swing like a PRO? Wow you sure hit a powerful tee shot like TIGER WOODS.  Wow your tee shots were amazing and long too!

Reasons: You will be able to feel the GAME as you progress along.

ONCE you have master the basics of golf, then you can look forward to purchase a PRICE BRAND GOLF SET of your choice, by then you will learn more about type of Shaft, Club head speed, Regular or Stiff shaft, Type of Grips, Type of GOlf balls etc...

By the way, my first golf club set was a DUNLOP Set, but my putter is a PING insert type.

I just replace my Dunlop set last year with a Nike set.

if your just taking it up, don't get a big expensive set. Most courses have clubs you can rent. Take some lessons and then get some good clubs, I would recommend taylormade woods, titleist or callaway irons, cleveland wedges and an odyssey or scotty cameron putter

Dunlop clubs are not very good.  Golf is one sport that you can buy yourself a better game.  The better clubs are more forgiving, allowing off center hits to go straighter and further.  I would search out a nice set of used clubs on e-bay, or golfsmith.   BUt don't get something TOO old, as technology has changed in the last few years.  If you go to golfsmith they will let you hit the used clubs so you can test them out.
