Golf course layouts?

Help me settle a dispute! I say, on a regulation golf course, I say that par 3 holes do not have a fairway. Is the area between the tee box and the tee an actual fairway?

  1. There are fairways on par 3's, but having your shot end up on the fairway is not normally considered desirable.  You do not get credit for hitting a fairway for your stats, so that may be the source of confusion.

  2. It depends on the hole some par3's have fairways and some don't it just depends on what the course designer wanted for that hole.

  3. NO CORRECT ANSWER IT COULD BE CONSIDERED A FAIRWAY OR APPROACH TECHNICALLY. IT WOULD DEPEND ON THE PERSON, PRO OR SUPERINTENDENT YOU ASK.

  4. First you need to define fairway.  I don't think it is a word you will find very often in the Rules of Golf.  There is "through the green" and there are "closely mown areas" but I don't think you will see fairway in there.  Sometimes there is a bailout area short or to the sides of the green at a par three that is cut just like the fairways on par 4s and 5s, but I don't think you should call them fairways.  Being in the fairway is the result of a good shot on a par 4 or 5, but the result of a poor shot on a par 3 so I would just say you are lucky you got a good lie.

  5. some par 3's have fairway and some dont.  Most do have whats called an approach, an area of fairway leading up the front edge of the green.  If you're playing lift, clean, and place in your own fairway (winter rules), this area would apply. As far as driving stats go, you cannot hit or miss a fairway on a par 3 hole. Note the rules of golf do not recognize fairway and rough on any hole. You're either in a sand hazard, a water hazard, on the green, or thru the green.

  6. It is an actual fairway.  Some holes might require a shot to land on the fairway and roll to the hole for example.   Billy Mayfair used to play the ball to roll onto the 3rd hole at Winged Foot West, a 216 yard monster par 3.

  7. Depends, somedo and some dont.  If there is an area mowed to fairway height, there is a fairway.  Sometimes there is only rough or any number of other things you are hitting over.  In that case, there is no fairway.  A fairway is a cut of grass, not necessarily  an area.
