I was exploring my future business options and i have always wanted to own a business. Recently i have considered buying and owning a golf course. I am having a hard time finding information on this type of career. I was curious if anyone could help me with some of the basics to help me decide if this is what i would consider as my profession.

Alright first off i would like to know what is the average profit for a golf course owner? i know this will vary greatly depending on private, public and also location. If you could give me different numbers for both private and public that would be great, also the difference between one in say northern states and one in southern states.

I would also like to know what is the start up cost of a golf course? Would it be smarter to make my own from nothing or possibly purcchase a already established golf course? What would be the average prices for a 9 hole or 18 hole golf course?

How much would it cost to run a golf course? I have seen prices form 400,000 and up and was wondering if this is accurate?

I understand that these answers will vary greatly as it all depends on location and how nice the course is. Just trying to get some ballpark figures on profit and expense for a course, to see if it would be worth looking more into for a career path. Thanks for all your help

  2. There is no money in the golfing industry... Its a losing battle, downhill on your investment the whole way in my opinion.

Profits are steady when it comes to country clubs, but their just a bunch of stuck up snobs to begin with, and I would not dare to set up a C.C. as your first enterprise, unless you were buying it out from another corp.

Everyone I know in the industry says the same, there is no money any more when it comes to running that sort of operation... (see sources).

  3. If golf is a passion, don't buy a golf course. However look at the elements of what owning a golf course is (building a customer base, providing great experiences for people, being the head honcho, prestige, creativity, ,etc.) and find a business opportunity that would meet those same criteria. BUT, you never know what might show up in course ownership so be open. There are schools that offer 2 year golf course management certicates.
