Golf courses are Rory McIlroy’s opponent, not Tiger Woods or any other player
Rory McIlroy said that different golf venues are the only opponent for him, rather than Tiger Woods or any other golf player in the field.
The 22-year-old Northern Irish professional recently achieved the world number one position by winning the Honda Classic in Florida. He had also declared that the former No. 1 American, Tiger Woods, is not a rival for him.
McIlroy has high plans to be competitive on every golf course. He said that his biggest rivals are golf courses that promise a tough battle.
His aim is to achieve higher positions on the leaderboard. He truly believes that if he delivers his best on different courses, then there is no space left for the competition with players.
Woods' ascending scores in the final round of the Honda Classic on Sunday were amazing.
He carded a 62 with four birdies and two amazing eagles. Such an impressive score helped him to finish the tournament on the runner-up position and two strokes behind McIlroy.
However, the tournament was won by the young Northern Irish star. Later, he denied the view of being involved in a state of competition with Woods.
“To be honest in golf, you can have a rival if you want, but at the end of the day, your biggest rival is a golf course. You have to be able to beat the golf course more often than not and that's all you are trying to do,” McIlroy said.
He went on to say, “I just want to go out there and play good golf and solid golf and if I can do that then people can make up the rivalries themselves”.
“Ultimately you're going to have to beat people coming down the stretch on Sundays and whether it is Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson or Lee Westwood, Luke Donald or Martin Kaymer, or whoever, I would never really want to say that I am in a rivalry with someone,”
he added.
This may be a positive approach to look at the courses rather than players.
It is a fact that if he delivers his best on every tournament he plays, high scores usually give a direct competition to the others.
He is in the field of the upcoming event of WGC-Cadillac Championship. All the world’s leading players are there, but he is again making the Blue Monster course his biggest rival.
