My best friend got back from iraq a few months ago, he is injured from it but has decided to take up a sport to move on with life. Golf seems to be the sport he is interested in, and i'd like to know if any golf pros know how to work with a client with a disability - who still has his left full leg, but lost half his right - i just dont want him to become too discouraged if he can't hit straight due to how hard it's gonna be to turn his hips / and put weight on his lead legg...

  1. Check with the Veterans Administration Hospital closest to your best friend and see if they have any rehabilitation programs which include golf. We have a civilian rehab center from which we lease property for our golf course. One of their programs does include golf every two weeks early in the morning. They use golf carts. One has a swivel seat which swings out on the passenger side on which the person who has lost use of his left side sits and hits the golf ball. The tires are also course equipment type so the cart may be driven onto the green so the person can putt. Another has a contraption like a back brace where the player is supported so that he can swing a club. Those are the two worst cases . Several others ( eight in total including a couple of therapists make up a couple of foursomes). Please check for your friend and also inquire of the local golf association affiliate of the USGA as  well as the USGA hqs in Far Hills, NJ. Keep us informed.
