  1. No, it's not a rich mans sport.

When I grew up, I didn't have money, my parents didn't have money...but I got a "free" set of crappy clubs and played on a backyard course in VT.

People who say that golf is a rich man's game are only seeing the highest level of "luxury" play.

It's like basketball. If you want to play in a gym with perfect floors, you'll pay more. If you want to play at the local street hoop, it costs a lot less.

  2. It's an expensive sport, but so is hockey and tennis. However, it's certainly within the reach of the common man.

  3. Dude I love playing golf and I make less than 30 grand a year.  That should tell you something.  Depending on where you live, golf can be affordable.  I choose to take the trial and error approach to golf.  I have read Tiger's book and try drills out of Golf Magazine to teach myself how to play.  I have never taken a lesson.  I play to a 14-16 handicap.  I play 9 holes more times than not, but will throw in a full round every now and then.  I don't belong to a club.  I don't have to play on a better course all the time.  I'll play anywhere.

  4. Yes it is still like that.

  5. it is also for rich men.

  6. no thisis a game for any age and is very affordable

  7. It's not exclusively for rich people.  There are a wide range of courses that vary from an expensive country club to an inexpensive municipal course.  The equipment is the same way.  A person can buy a fairly inexpensive set of beginners clubs or can go the route of the PGA pro and buy an extremely expensive set.

Unless you're living in poverty, there's a price range that most golfers can fit into their budget.

  8. Playing golf can be as expensive as we want it to be. Green fees will continue too rise. New equipment isn't getting any cheaper. As my good friend Say's "fortunately there's Ebay."...lol  Maybe I should give Ebay a try I spend an average of 10k a year on this habit.

  9. Yes and no. Golf can be very expensive. High-end public courses $100 to $500 pre round. Private clubs $2000 – 100K+ initiation and dues from $500 – stupid.

Cheap public courses are $20 per round; a nice round is $50. Even at that rate playing every week will cost at least $1000 per year. That does not include equipment (balls, tees, clubs, beer…).

So you don’t have to be rich but you do have a have a modest amount to disposal income.

You also don’t have to be a man, women are allowed on the golf course.

  10. Not really it used to be like 50 years ago but now it is for anybody

  11. Golf expands to both ends of the gamut. Bite off all you can afford.
