Golf has the least number of reported injuries. True or false?
To many, golf is a very passive, slow and boring game but to some it is their life. It is said that golf has its own charm and people crave for it as much as they crave for any other thing in the world.
Golf may lack behind in enthusiasm and flair as compared to other sports such as football, tennis and hockey but just like any other sport it is also very physically demanding.
In golf, a player does not have to sprint, shout and collide with other players as in the case of other sports but extremely high concentration levels are required to master the game. Such demanding work out of the brain can really drain one’s energies.
In golf one has to stand and walk for hours day in day out and one has to have a very strong back to master the golf swing.
All these things take a toll on the human body. Critics argue that in golf there are no injuries as compared to other sports such as cricket, football or tennis for that matter. Golf has its own kind of injuries which will not be seen in other sports like
tennis elbow.
Tennis elbow is an injury which is caused because the elbow has over worked and it starts to hurt. Judging by the name, it looks as if this injury is only caused to tennis players but in fact tennis players are least prone to such an injury.
Golfers are also prone to lower back injuries, wrist injuries, and shoulder issues.
In golf, one may have sprains and over worked ankles and knees but one cannot have a broken leg, arm, or nose as in the case of other sports.
According to a survey report in Britain, 163 amateur golfers reported that they 57% of them had sustained golf related injuries in one year. In America, golf related injuries are predominantly of lower back in males and wrist and elbow injuries in females.
Golf may be passive and boring but it is surely demanding. It may not require you to be physically tough but it certainly requires high amount of endurance.
Tiger Woods at the start of the season missed a few tournaments because of an injury in Achilles tendon. One would ask how a player can get an Achilles tendon injury in golf.
Well one has to stand in for hours on the golf course and this can tire out muscles very badly, so until and unless a body physically healthy and tough, it will keep on getting injured.
As far as I think, golf is not a sport which has the least number of reported injuries. Yes most of the times in golf a player may get an injury which is not very serious but an injury is an injury.
In my opinion, golf has one of the highest rates of reported injuries as compared to other sports. In other sports, injuries are big but they do not come too often.
It is estimated that 50% of the professional players quit or take retirement from golf because of injuries. This is a huge number in comparison with other sports, we hardly see any player retiring in any other sport solely due to injuries.
Golf is not a game of strength, instead, it is a game technique and skill. If the technique is correct, a player will stay away from injuries. However, if the technique is not correct then a player is prone to injuries no matter how physically strong he
is.
