  1. Hybrid irons are designed to get the ball in the air quickly with minimal spin to produce a high, soft landing trajectory.  Hybrids are perfect for high handicappers who are new to the game and have a hard time hitting low or low-mid irons.  Hybrids have a very low center of gravity as well as an increased MOI to help with off center hits.  I have 2 hybrids in my set, they replace my 3 and 4 irons.

Do not buy a set with gaps in it, such as 3/5/7/9/pw most of these sets are cheap and of really poor quality; also as you get better you'll want to have the option to hit a variety of different shots.

In my opinion it is best to buy a 1 or 2 year old good quality kit then a brand new bargan basement set.  You will save big bucks in the long run and will also save strokes on your game.  The ONE club I would spend the most money on is your putter.  More than half of all strokes in a game are putts (not drives) and as the saying goes, Drive for show, Putt for dough.  Make sure you also have a good set of wedges.

  2. 1. you need to educate yourself on what is what when it comes to golf equipment.

    2. Why would you ask someone else to tell you what you hit best?

You have to do your own homework on this and decide what you hit the best.  A store with a launch monitor will help you decide what is best for your particular swing and game. The data will not lie to you.

  3. Hybrids feel and swing differently than your long irons (usually 1 thru 6).  If you have problem hitting your long irons, hybrid MIGHT be your answer.  They have a bigger head, feels more like a short fairway wood and can get the ball up in the air easier and straighter.

I also don't agree on just getting odd or even number clubs for the sake of cost savings.  Each club has a specific distance that you are COMFORTABLE hitting.  If you are missing clubs, you will end up either baby a shot with a lower number club, or hit too hard with a higher number club; both will likely produce undesirable or inconsistent results.

Take a set of irons to the driving range, start hitting 10 balls each from 6 iron down to your longest iron.  the irons you have a lot of problem hitting are good candidates for hybrids.

  4. Hybrids have a much larger club head than regular, I don't use them because I use regular Irons and they feel very different to me.  You get a much steeper loft with regular iron then you do with a hybrid.  And if its a bunch cheaper for you I would just go with a 3,5,7,9 add a sand wedge to your bag.  In mine I have a 3,5,7,9, Sand wedge, putter, and a 1 Wood.  Too many options can become the enemy, when you have to many choice you tend to play to long or to short which means more strokes or more balls you have to buy, which sucks!

  5. Hybrid irons take the place of long irons, such a 3 or 4 iron.  The lofts are not going to be different.  The difference is that a hybrid has a solid feel to it.  Which is not the case with a regular 3 or 4.  Which when trying to hit a long iron shot can cause you to over swing to get the distance you need.  That is a feeling you get when you do not trust the loft.

As for having only odd clubs in your bag or evens, that is not a good idea.  The reason for the system is to cover all the yardages with about a 10 to 15 yards between each club depending on how hard you hit.  If you for example are trying to hit 140 yards and an 8 iron would be perfect, then you would either have to knock the h**l out of a 9 iron or let up on a 7 iron, which is better?  That is why it is important to practice a lot so that you have a good feel for you yardage for each club and have confidence in them.  Then the only adjustments you need to make is type of shot.
